Avian Vets

Jul 15, 2010 21:36

Hello y'all. I was just remembering seeing people asking about vets in their area over the past couple years I have been on the community and I was given a wonderful website by Dr. Furguson. It is www.aav.org and it has listings of avian certified vets across the US. Dunno if anyone else knows about this website but I thought I would share.

There are no "avian certified" veterinarians. AAV is not a certifying organization. It is a membership organization for vets with an interest in avian medicine. There are, however, BOARD certified avian practioners. They are certified through the American Board of Veterinary Practicioners (www.ABVP.com/finddiplomate.aspx). If a vet does not have "Dipl. ABVP - Avian" after their name they are not board certified.

(con't) The above is not to say that a board certified avian vet is better than a vet who belongs to the AAV. ABVP vets may belong to the AAV... or not. And their are vets who will treat parrots (with the skills and knowledge to do so OR not) who are neither board certified by the ABVP or members of the AAV. FWIW The practice that I use has one ABVP (one of 3 in my state) and two AAV vets.

Huh, that's actually a good thing to know. I didn't realize that. When I was on here a few months ago looking for a vet they recommended Bridget Furguson and since she was switching practices at the time she said to keep an eye out for her new location that site. Sorry!
