Chasing the Dream

Major Evan Lorne strode down the corridor of the Atlantis base like a man with a mission. To be fair, he did have a mission: Find his botanist and ensure his team would be ready for their upcoming trip to P3X 458. He had already confirmed with the other military member of his team and had found the entomologist playing volleyball at the south pier, only Dr. David Parrish, green thumb extraordinaire, was evading him. How he had managed to end up with the “bug and flower” team, he had no idea, but Lorne was happy enough to take the tamer missions that didn’t generally end up with anyone running for their lives. At least with his team it was possible to let the scientists do their thing without having to arm them. He was fairly sure putting a gun in Parrish’s hand again would be a mistake. The first time had been bad enough.

He tapped his ear piece, for what had to have been the tenth time. “Lorne to Parrish,” he said crisply, then muttered, “Pick up already, dammit.”

“Here, Major,” Parrish’s breathy voice came back through the tinny speaker. “What was that last bit again?”

“Nothing, doc,” Lorne quickly replied, stuttering to a stop in the middle of a deserted hall. “I’ve just been trying to find you and you weren’t answering your radio.”

“Yes, right, sorry about that.” Lorne could practically hear the head down, foot scuffing embarrassment in the other man’s tone even as he seemed to try to catch his breath. “I, uh, I was a little … busy.”
