A Potpourri Against Popery

Actually, this LJ entry is not a 17th-century anti-Catholic screed. I just liked that title.

I'm beginning to think that putting DVDs in the wrong section at HMV and Virgin represents the finest form of satire in Britain. Sometimes you get a funny effect that could conceivably be caused by a simple accident, such as when the titles are as close alphabetically as Catwoman and something called Catwalk Cannibals: Binge and Purge (actually observed in HMV in Middlesbrough). But others must surely be the result of deliberate sabotage, like the Bette Midler concert DVD found under the marker tab for Game of Death, or the row of DVD copies of BBC 3's profoundly depressing beer-n-shaggin' 'comedy' Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps that was headed up by a copy of The Virgin Suicides.

My favourite Snopes thread in some time.

Trouble at the mill for everyone's favourite Doris Day-resembling actor-singer-activist Nellie McKay; her second album Pretty Little Head, sequel to Parma's 2004 Album Of The Year Get Away From Me has been indefinitely postponed over concerns about length and that old chestnut 'musical direction', something which the bastard daughter of Ethel Merman is less than delighted about. Oddly, Amazon.co.uk has Pretty Little Head down for pre-order as a US import, yet the American version of the site refuses to acknowledge the errant album's existence. Instead, it offers eighteen billion versions of Get Away From Me (including an utterly pointless-sounding "clean version" - honestly, what's the point of owning that record if you can't tell all your friends that you own the only album in HMV's 'Easy Listening' section to include the phrase "Die, motherfucker!") before closing your search with an apparently unrelated result whose title probably offers the most succinct commentary on the whole sorry affair.

Incidentally, thank you to Amazon.com for telling me that Martha Wainwright's new EP contains explicit lyrics, as I would never have been able to work this out on my own.
