MythBusters and pizza

Jun 05, 2011 00:03

I'm watching a DVRed episode of MythBusters. Pizza Hut paid to sponsor this episode, and they made a special MythBusters-specific commercial with the build team.

In the commercial, Tory claims that pizza embodies all sorts of science, then he and Grant together put together a statement that flour, water, and yeast - "inert materials" - combine and "a chemical reaction causes the bread to rise."

One of those "inert materials" is a living organism. And it seems pretty simplistic to compare the complex processes of fermentation and gluten formation to simple chemical reactions.

I feel like they're trying too hard to pretend they're all about the science. But then, I've been getting that feeling about the show of late, too. (For example, this episode's primary myth is yet another pseudo-myth whose primary raison d'etre is to let them play with guns again. Yawn. At least the secondary myth doesn't have them running to the bomb range or the gun range to blow something up or shoot at it, for a change.)
