how many pounds?

How long should you make someone pay for something?

It seems easy. Theoretically. An eye for an eye; if you can't do the time, don't do the crime; heat and kitchens...it's all very nice and neat, cut and dried. Especially if you're an impartial observer, if you can look and weigh the evidence with total detachment.

But what if you're the one sitting in judge and jury of the person who has wronged you?

If someone does something that hurt you, deeply, how long should they have to pay for it? If they smashed your heart and then looked on in total indifference? If they made your professional life a living hell for months?

What if both of these things happened at the same time - if they knew that your chest was hollow because they had made off with, then casually discarded your organ, and simultaneously stopped caring about your (mutual) work? What if they didn't just leave you holding the reins completely for the running of a place, but also actively disrupted your every action?

How long?

A few weeks? A few months? A year?

What if they apologize? Sincerely. Not profusely or extravagently, but several times. A few serious, total ones and a few shot off during giggly moments?

How long?

And how in the hell can you begin to know when you are anything but an impartial observer?

He thinks I make him pay for it everyday.

I say it's not been nearly long enough.

So - who's right?
