eternal glory awaits the student

Okay.

So, I just (finally - I haven't been on the computer in, like, days; I've been playing catch-up on my flist for two hours now and I'm still at skip=150 and I just now saw that it was released) saw the teaser trailer.

OMG.

I....

I love Potter.

I love this universe. I love the characters and their relationships and all they have to survive.

I love how fucking dark it is - how this is a struggle between good and evil (true evil, fucking sociopathic 'I don't care about anyone but myself and will use you or anyone else and that boy with the scar is a nuisance and pain in my nondead ass and must die' evil - that has no rationalization or motivation; evil that there is nothing to explore or discover or figure out or change; it just is), right and wrong, and we know that, Harry knows that, but how everything is so grey and murky, at the same time. I love the fifth book, I love the fact that it feels hopeless at the end, the fact that it makes you hurt, to read, to stand, to keep from wailing with the sheer desperation and pain of it all - I love that, because that's what it would feel like, to be hunted like that.

This is not a world about flying brooms and turning tea kettles into cats. It's not about mirrors that can talk or magic wands. It's not about moving stairs or three-headed dogs.

It's about an authority figure who makes you carve 'I will not tell lies' into your own hand, until it bleeds and scars. It's about finding your place in the world - and realizing that it's as bad as the one you left, but somehow better, simply because it's your own. It's about absolute love and devotion, and absolute jealousy and envy, of your best friends. It's not being able to trust anyone in your life, but choosing to trust some; choosing to trust them with your life, and your secrets.

It sucks, this world.

It's not about magic.

It's about how magic doesn't make anything better.

These people are scarred and fucked-up and desperate and pleading - and the fact they can Apparate or floo themselves round the world or conjure up chairs from the ether makes no fucking difference.

It's twisted and nasty and there's so much going on on the surface, you're scared to know what goes on below.

It's fantastic and involving and gorgeous.

This is not some fairytale; there are no fairy godmothers and the godfathers are all dead. Nothing is going to end up okay and it's not going to teach a valuable lesson.

This is not for children.

And I am so, so glad the movies are moving that way. They're finally going the way of this world - it's not mugging best friends and flying cars and glorious feasts.

It's sorrow being tangible and 'if you want to kill Harry you'll have kill us too' and being hunted, simply because of your existence.

That end, with Dumbledore and 'soon we must all face the choice between what is right and what is easy' - is perfect.
