Soomin is nervous. She'd forgotten what it was like to date someone on Valentine's Day. It'd been so long that'd she hadn't even know what to get him. It's not like she's known him for that long. No, wait. That's not right. She's known him for a long time, but they haven't been together that long.
She's always had a crush on him, before she was old enough to act on it. Before he saw her as anything other than a friend. Now she's old enough and he realized he likes her and they're finally dating after a year of pretending they didn't like each other. It's weird, she thinks, how easily their friends accepted them. But then again, it was also easy for them to change from friends to more than friends to actually dating.
The subway pulls into the station and Soomin exits, her fingers shoved into the pockets of her coat. She's cold, it's February after all, but Sungjong said the restaurant was nice and she'd wanted to wear a dress. She'd run home after university to change and grab her gift for him, something ridiculous, a watch she saw him looking at.
She climbs the stairs and steps onto the sidewalk. The restaurant is a few blocks away, but she sees Sungjong walking toward her. He looks nice and it makes her stomach flip. His face lights up when he sees her and he jogs toward her. For a moment they're awkward around each other, but then Sungjong reaches out and slides his hand into hers.
His hand is warm and she steps in close, leaning in to kiss him. They talk idly about their days, her classes and his job. Her stomach flips a few more times as they walk. Then, just before they get to the restaurant, Sungjong stops. He pulls out a small box and hands it to Soomin. She opens it and inside is a beautiful necklace she'd been eying a few weeks early. She blushes and then takes her scarf off so he can put it on.
She pulls the box for him free from her purse and hands it to him. She likes the way his eyes go wide and then he grins when he opens the lid and sees the watch. He puts it on immediately and they walk into the restaurant, hand in hand.
Sometimes Soomin thinks she can tell what people are thinking about them. She's taller and skinner than he is. Her hair is long, but always up. She wears heels because she likes the way her legs and she knows Sungjong does too. Even so, people think they're strange. He's short, stockier and always in sneakers and jeans. Not that they care and Soomin is grateful.
Their dinner is good, it's a perfect date, ending with her curled up in bed with him. When her friends ask if she got any sweets, she tells them she didn't need any. She got exactly what she wanted.
