Yoohwan doesn't know when the wings appear, one day he wakes up and finds Sunghee staring at him, her eyes wide with surprise. She can't seem to form words, she just slides off the bed, offers him her hand and then tugs him into the bathroom. He stands in front of the mirror, they both do.
He feels the panic attack before it really starts. It begins at the bottom of his spine, working its' way up toward the back of his neck. His heart races and he has to grip the edge of the bathroom counter to keep from falling over. The room seems to spin around him.
He feels Sunghee's hands on him, stroking along his arm. Her mouth against his jaw, finding his mouth. He kisses her frantically, as if he can chase the panic away. It works, at least temporarily. When she finally pulls back, her fingers hold his face in her hands.
"Yoohwan." She whispers his name as she turns his head from the mirror. "We'll go to emergency."
He can only nod.
She helps him dress, his wings, for that's really what they are. Fit neatly under his t-shirt, folding down flush against his back. She pulls on jeans as he does, wearing one of his old hoodies. He's too distracted to appreciate how good it looks on her.
The subway right is quiet, it's early in the morning, not even six yet. She grips his head, as if she can sense his fear. He looks over at her, maybe she can. The train pulls into their stop and he stands, letting her lead him off the train, up the steps and to the front of the hospital.
He doesn't want to go in, but he forces himself to. The nurses don't bat an eye when Sunghee tells them why they need to see a doctor. Yoohwan feels himself start to go a little faint, but Sunghee's hand never leaves his, not even while she fills out the paperwork for him. He's glad they've been together for so long.
The doctor doesn't seem surprised, either. He explains that they've had a bunch of similar cases over the past couple of days. The wings, he says, will either disappear or stay, depending. Sunghee asks on what, but the doctor has no answer. Instead, they x-ray his back and do other things Yoohwan doesn't understand. What they find out, though, is that his wings act like they've always been there.
Later, back in their flat, Sunghee tells him she loves them. She things they're beautiful. She reaches out and, touching one of them. They're soft, she says. She strokes her fingers along them and Yoohwan is surprise that he feels it. That he likes how it feels.
As she leans in to kiss him, she whispers that they're delicate, like a butterfly's wings. When she kisses him, as he pulls her onto his lap, he can feel them fluttering, just slightly.
