I can't believe I waited so long to get into knitting and crocheting and sewing and all that jazz. I fought SO HARD when I was a young teen to NOT do any of this stuff at school in Home Economics; I hated "Home Ick", and was far more interested in playing around in shop class or music and art classes. Now, I'm at the point in my life where I understand how fun (and addictive) these crafts really are!
My sewing and crocheting projects are a bit messy right now, but it's all in the process of learning, so I'm cutting myself a break there. I'm trying to make as many Christmas presents as I can this year; not only do I not have much money this year due to being out of work since October, but I want the pride of giving something that I made myself.
I have a couple of patterns for crocheted owls I want to make for a good friend (Miss Kitty) who is nuts about them:
and these:
or maybe this:
If I'm super-ambitious, I'm making her an owl hat. This is the pic:
I think she's nutty enough to actually wear it, too! *wink*
I also have purchased the supplies I need to make *redacted in case she reads this* for FormerRoomie. Miss Kitty has promised to help me with the pattern and creating them, as she's quite talented with all this stuff. Pics when they're done; they will be glorious.
As for knitting: well, I started early this year to give my hands something to do during the long, cold, dark winter months after the frantic pace of preparing for my sister's wedding in February was over, and I've surprisingly come to really enjoy it.
And by "enjoy", I mean I'm a little obsessed.
And by "a little", I mean a lot.
It started off with just randomly choosing a skein of cheap, multi-coloured acrylic yarn and plastic needles to practice with at the local WallyWorld...and now I've got a LOT of yarn of various types and many more needles (I'm currently in love with a set of vintage smooth metal ones I found during a Value Village pillage for Naturopolis back in May); I have one large former project I abandoned after working on it for months over the spring and summer (I unraveled it all last month and re-balled all the yarn I used to make it -- surprisingly and relaxing, go figure!); one project actually completed and given away as a gift (pic below), and a whole bunch more in various stages of planning, execution, or completion. The living room looks like a granny exploded in here; I can't believe I yarn-bombed our apartment! So far,
furious_g is pretty calm about yarn everywhere, and luckily for me, Hexamorph doesn't give a shit about yarn, or I'd probably be pulling skeins out of his butt every week.
Here's a pic of my first completed project that I gifted back in September; a large chenille baby blanket for my beautiful sister's baby; it's meant to be tossed on their wooden floors so the wee one can roll around on it and not whack his noodle. Nobody knew the gender until quite late in the game, so I went with yellow and multi-colour to cover my bets. I promised her I wouldn't post pics of her, her hubby, or the baby without prior consent (which I can guess will not be forthcoming anytime soon), so for today, she has a happyface head. Nyeah. I respect her request, though, and I feel the same way about images of me.
I look at it now and wince at how much better I could have made it, as my skills are getting progressively better (though I'm STILL not counting rows like I should be!) It was my own design, as simple as it is, and I pretty much made it up as I went along.
I have two current Christmas knitting projects on the go at present: another baby blanket for my nephew, and a shawl for my old friend Lady S. This baby blanket I'm knitting out of the softest blue, yellow and multi-speckled white baby wool I could find, and I pretty much created the pattern myself. The shawl I'm scared to start, even though I'm running out of time, because it's from a pattern, and I don't really understand pattern reading yet! I don't want to screw this up! I just keep telling myself, by this time next year I'll be making Moebius scarves on circular needles, and knitting blankets with the Entrelac stitch. I can do this....I can do this...!
Wish me luck!
