I thought otherwise myself ! ^__^ just about two years ago. My plan was to get a worthy sound card (Audigy2 sb350 turned up) and some quality headphones by Philips. That surpassed my crappy audio system by uh, thousand times ^__^ That was even better with KX unofficial drivers (these have no agressive noise-reduction and use the better _rear_ speakers channel of Audigy to process all music! devious.) This got me to hear much more of my music... By the way, getting too much bass right into one's ear is not so good @__@
...the real good experience came when I got a pair of Corvette audio systems, made around 1990 and supposed to be the best made in former USSR. With huge 28cm bass speakers and coffin-like ~70cm boxes they do good without any (direct) pressure upon one's ears! The high frequency tweeter sound is also amazing.
I am no audiophile, never. These persons throw 600 USD (or more) to get the stereo audio "pair" system, and around $1000 or 1500 to get the amp @____@ to me, a Pioneer-1016 amp of around 15 kg is just OK...
...and not just anyone of these wasteful enthusiasts (I know them, they even have this cable mania) ever wanted to use headphones! Of any price or quality. I also use the phones just at night, or my neghbours will have their revenge by listening to their pointless, non-anime or japanese - pop when I sleep all the morning @__@
Your words are absolute truth indeed - good phones are useful and not the airplane-given horror (I have these too)...
The point is that almost no one needs such "takai" phones at all - better go for normal size audio system ^__^
And phones - are just phones... should be, and of good quality, but "excess" prices of ~$400+ are just waste. - better invest in amps & speakers.
so the fans might think of it, get some Resonable phones and save $300 for greater glory deeds ^__^
