The Haul for January 18, 2004

Ah yes, finally a new Haul. It's a new year, so here we go!

FIRST: Miyuki-chan in Wonderland, by CLAMP
REVIEW:Many worlds and universes exist beyond what we can see. All are beautiful and vast, filled with beauties to satisfy every fancy. But be warned; should you happen upon these worlds, the femme fatales can be as deadly as they are beautiful. Many would die for a glimpse at these worlds. Miyuki would do anything to make them go away.
Hee hee, CLAMP has done it again. This book is mainly an art showcase for the group, but don't be fooled. This is not for kiddies. There is extremley light hentai throught the book, as CLAMP's version of Alice gets fondled and groped everywhere she goes. It's irreverent, it's beautifully drawn, and it teaches you to never, EVER, follow a woman dressed a playboy bunny riding on a skateboard.

NEXT: Hellsing, Volume one, by Kouta Hirano
REVIEW: Take Britain. Mix in a hot, brooding vampire, a no-bullshit female , make her the head of a secret orginization, add lots of big guns, blood and gore, and a big-busted femme vamp, and you'd basically have Hellsing in a nutshell. However, that just barely scratches the surface of this great manga, which inspired the hit anime. There is more humour, dark thorugh it may be, here than in the anime. Though I have some trouble comprehending what Dark Horse was thinking when they gave Anderson that...accent. Sometime I don't understand WHAT he's saying. In any event, this manga rocks 12 ways from Tuesday. Buy it, read it, then read it again. It's just that good.
RATING:9.5

NEXT: Ai Yori Aoshi, by Kou Fumizuki
REVIEW:Aoi Sakuruba is a woman in search of her past. Specifically, she is looking for her dearest childhood friend, Kaoru. However, along her journey, she gets lost, and a kind man offers her his help. They journey together, but the whole time, Aoi never asks for his name. After the dissapoinment upon not finding him, Aoi lets the man take her to his house. A few moments later, a picture reveals the truth: the kind man that had been helping her was Kaoru all along! Overjoyed, the kind, polite Aoi reveals that she has come to be his wife. May the games begin.
Despite my horrible plot summary, this manga is sweet as candy. It doesn't seem to have a bad bone in it's body (though there is some nudity). Surprising, since it was published in a seinen (young men's) manga anthology called "Young Animal", alongside the ultra-violent Berserk. It's not for everyone, that is certian. It's a calm story, with only family disagreements disrupting the smooth flow of things. It seems more shoujo to me then seinen, but... Perhaps the nudity has something to do with that classification, even though it's not much. Either way, it's a great manga, and I am buying the next volume.
