Wedding Bells For DC

Mar 04, 2010 08:03

Washington, D.C.'s same-sex marriage law has gone into effect, with all the attendant hoopla. Happy couples have swarmed into courthouses, while the Westboro Baptist Church protesters* outside added a colorful note to the festivities. Usually, I link to an article, but today, photos..

Also, the Washington Archdiocese of the Catholic Church has made good on its promise to take its toys and go home, removing spousal benefits for everyone from the workers at Catholic Charities. Because there's nothing like punishing your straight employees for . . . I don't know, the sin of happening to live in a jurisdiction that recently decided that people the organization doesn't like can get married? "Hi, new hire who is a straight white male wed a month ago to his lovely white blonde girlfriend! You can't cover your lovely Catholic bride with your health insurance to pay for all the babies we're sure you'll be making because the gay couple down the street just got married, too!" Um. That sure sounds to me like a plot to swell the ranks of the Episcopalians.

But whatever. Kallah kallah mazel tov! Khosn khosn mazel tov!

*For a hate group, the WBC tends to have a surprisingly laid-back effect. Several localities that have received advance notice of their intent to picket (including my own university last year), have taken advantage of the time to organize large gay-rights-oriented love fests, complete with musical performances, s'mores, and, at my school at least, the collection of a significant chunk of change to be donated to an organization that takes in and cares for LGBT teens in family distress. That was a bizarre day, but a fun one, definitely.
