Movie Review! Star Trek Into Darkness

May 20, 2013 21:24

Took myself down to the new Harper Theater to see this today. I have to say, for a $6 matinee, it wasn't bad. I'm glad I went, and I'm glad I saw it. I also have to say, having seen it, that I'm perfectly happy with J.J. Abrams going on to reboot Star Wars.

Here be spoilers, should anyone care )

Ooh, great review. This:

One of the things that was missing from the Khan role -- and from the movie as a whole, although this role was a particularly good example -- was a sense of relationship.

is exactly what I was wrestling with while watching the film. You never got that sense at all, this crew isn't seasoned enough in so many respects [within and without the film itself], and you can't expect the same sort of gravity with an unseasoned crew; you just don't care.

Thanks for articulating that.

Yeah, one of the things that I thought was missing from both of Abrams's films was the sense that his crew had earned any of their Big Moments. It makes it almost jarring when Leonard Nimoy crops up, because he's the only person involved in any way with the movie who's done the work and earned the gravitas. The movie kind of twists around him for a second, and then he's gone. And no one benefits from his wisdom. Which is weird.

Glad you liked this!
