Among Other Things

Very musically crowded weekend, covering styles ranging from Java to Scotland to Alabama.

I attended the Chicago New Year's Ball on Saturday night, which is always a fun event. How many people can realistically say, "oh, I have to go get dressed now, I'm going to the Ball," and mean it? Gowns/cocktail dresses, gentlemen in kilts and Bonnie Prince Charlie jackets, the works.

They have the ball at the Ukrainian Cultural Center in Ukrainian Village, which is a lovely venue. It has a real ballroom, with chandeliers, curtains, a parquet dance floor . . . the works. They offer a banquet before the ball, too, which I think makes us one of the very few Scottish balls to feature borscht as the first course. I won a prize in the raffle this year, too! I chose a Silk Road CD, because I heart Yo-Yo Ma.

I was very thoroughly danced with, to the point where the sweat on my neck made my necklace chain turn my skin green. The sign of a good night, says I.

And I de-flowered a very nice gentleman right there on the dance floor.

Yup. Pulled it right out of his buttonhole during a reel of three. Big, absurdly pink silk rose.

life, dancing
