Online Petition Against GST Hike

Nov 15, 2006 16:56

There is this online petition against the GST hike. Just want to express my opinion on this. I went to check out this petition and decided that I do not want to put my name down and be associated with it - much as I am against the hike.

The reasons are simple. Firstly, when I viewed the people who signed the petition and their comments, the impression I got was that they consist of a 'virtual mob'. Nothing credible. If a bunch of mobsters were to walk down the street right now protesting against the hike, I am not sure I want to join them because really, I am not sure whether they are just stirring up trouble for the sake of stirring up trouble, or they really know what they are doing.

Secondly, there is absolutely no ownership to the petition. No indication at all who started it, why it was started, but just a few links to articles from CNA. This is very different from some other online petitions that I signed before where there are clear indications of who started the petitions and clearly written statements by the people who started the petitions regarding the situation they are protesting against and why.

It is so convenient to start an online petition these days and such petitions can snowball very quickly as the message gets passed on from person to person online. However, I really think we should all be more discerning when it comes to putting our names down on any such petition.
