SUMMARY: A mini-vacation in West Virginia
SPOILERS/WARNINGS: None.
AUTHOR'S NOTES: Seems like just the right place to take a break.

There was some down time between real hunts, so Dean and Sam decided that they’d take a little detour down to West Virginia, to a place both of them had always wanted to see in person. They’d heard stories as children and as adults, had even seen that lame-ass cable show with the guys who claimed they hunted ghosts and spirits and haunted places. The show was basically a night-vision view of a couple dudes exchanging the following conversation on repeat for an hour:

“Hey, did you see that?”

“No.”

“Woah, what was that noise?”

“I didn’t hear anything.”

“Dude, what’s that over there?”

“Nothing.”

Borrrrrrrrrrring. And stupid. Dumb shits didn’t even have decent equipment. And for some reason, had no freaking clue that any ghost or spirit worth its salt (HA! Salt!) would never let itself be captured on video for all of the basic-cable audience to see.

So there they were, the brothers Winchester, at the place that had formerly been the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum, at night under a full moon, with time to kill and genuine curiosity. They had no night vision glasses, no faulty equipment and no video camera, so naturally it wasn’t five minutes before they saw the first ghost. It nodded at them, they nodded back, and they all kept moving. Within half an hour, at least a dozen restless spirits had revealed themselves to Dean and Sam, but none of them seemed to mean any harm. They spent their time inhabiting an abandoned building, no one was getting hurt, and the ghosts didn’t seem unhappy or try to throw either of the men around, which both men had experienced plenty of times in the past and had no desire to put that particular record on repeat.

They spent a little time talking to a couple of the ghosts, the ones that were willing to communicate with them verbally and not the “smash you into a wall or headstone or tree” kind of way. There were some interesting stories - some creepy, some fascinating and some just downright sad. They talked to the spirits of old women, young men, small children, each of them with their own unique tale to tell.

When Sam and Dean were both getting delirious from sleep deprivation and the sun started making its way very slowly up toward the horizon, they decided to call it a night. No salt rounds were fired, no iron was swung. They said their goodbyes and got back into the car in search of a nearby diner where they could get some pancakes and bacon before they checked into a crappy motel for the night. Well, ok, for the day, whatever.

These were men who didn’t take much “vacation time”, but they both felt like they’d done something good - seen a place they’d always wanted to see, heard things they didn’t already know, and didn’t get roughed up. All in all, not a bad way to spend a day or two off the job.
