Letter from the Pathologist's office. mortal_sand January 9 2009, 20:05:17 UTC
Mr Moody,

There are full and official reports attached, but they're overly complicated, if I'm perfectly honest, as it's quite medically clear of the cause of death for Gideon and Fabian Prewett.

Both were killed by the Killing Curse, after sustaining several non-fatal injuries conducive of a long, sustained struggle. Both Curses are from the same wand, but the tracing of whose is your job, not mine. As for the other wounds, the magical wands have different magical traces, but as to be expected with spells of a lesser magnitude, no direct link to specific wands will be possible. They both died within minutes of each other, as far as I can tell. They bled significantly before their deaths, but not nearly enough to be fatal. I need someone to identify both bodies, and then I can release them. If you could send an Auror to find me a relative, that would be most helpful.

As for Mr Michael Dorien, this murder is more complicated, undoubtedly. It shows similar features to the murder of Mr Benjy Fenwick, but not enough to link the two together on murder method alone. There's evidence of significant post-mortem brutality to the body, including the removal of internal organs. However, there has, significantly, been no magic used to murder him. All wounds were inflicted through manual methods, and the cause of death was the first significant injury; his neck was broken, by the time he suffered all subsequent injuries, he was dead. There's more detail in the report. Again, if there is someone who could identify him, so I could release the body, that would be useful.

Any further questions, do not hesitate to contact me.

Healer Caius Nott,

The Prewetts' relatives should come to you soon, though Mr. Dorien may take slightly longer as he has no close relatives to the best of our knowledge. We should be able relieve you of the bodies within the week.

All I will ask of you sir, is whether you could think of any other murders in recent history which the method of Mr. Dorien's death might relate to. It would be a great help to our investigation.

Mr Moody,

Very well. Anyone he worked with will suffice, I only need someone who knew him for a significant amount of time. Besides, I could probably call an identification from the documents found on him and save anyone the trouble, but I'd like a positive ID, to be honest.

As I said, the only one I can particularly think of is Benjy Fenwick's, but mainly because it was committed within the Ministry. Unfortunately, there was not enough of his body found to provide a proper autopsy, so it was difficult to determine a specific cause of death. The degree of mutilation is similar to many other murders of squibs and muggles, and unlike Mr Fenwick, there is little to no sign of struggle. There are not many cases I can immediately think of where magic was not used at all, unfortunately, but that does not mean it is unique. Many of the murders earlier on in the war were done by knife instead of by magic, but there was significant evidence that the death was caused by knife wounds, not by breaking of the neck. Mr Dorien's death is unusual, as he was long dead before he was mutilated, as if someone was trying to save him the suffering.

It's incredibly complicated, as it follows some patterns, but doesn't follow them all uniformly, so it's difficult to place.

Healer Nott,

Thank you for your professional opinion. If you do happen to think of anything, please contact us, as I shall if any other inquiries arise.

We will send one of Mr. Dorien's co-workers around as soon as may be, they probably knew him best.
