Character Name: Kevin Flynn.
Series: Tron!1982 version.
Age: Kevin's 33, but a young 33. He was born in 1949 and sort of rose through the usual roads of life rather quickly.
From When?: From just after RAM dies. His deal involves bring RAM back and making sure nobody else gets hurt on the grid in the course of trying to defeat the MPC.

However, Kevin wouldn't be adverse to the admiral deciding to do him an extra favor and get him the proof he needs that Dillinger stole his games, but that's another story and entirely entirely up to the big guy.

Inmate/Warden: Kevin Flynn runs an arcade for children and young adults. He has a wide circle of caring friends along with a few close chums. He is loyal and cares about both people and his creations. He is also dedicated with a bit of a stubborn streak, but once he commits he follows through. He is a warden through and through.

Item: Kevin's Identity Disc. While he doesn't sleep with it, nor is he in his gaming suit, he figured it'd be a useful little tool. His disc uploads his inmate's file automatically and warms to the touch if his inmate is in trouble or has left.

It also functions as a weapon, and apart from his mind it's the only weapon Flynn really has. It's a circular boom-a-rang. Picture a sharp frisbee. Now picture it flying at your head. He's not afraid to use it either.

Abilities/Powers: Kevin Flynn is two things. A programmer and a gamer. The two mix and mingle and overlap, but he can't have one without the other. The programmer side of him is extremely intelligent. He has a doctorate from CalTECH university, he work(ed) for a major corporation writing security programs. He's not a stupid guy when it comes to mechanics and the programs people in 1982 are becoming so dependent on.

However, when it comes to people he's a little reckless and impulsive. He's a business man (but he's not the greatest at it) he's always up for fun as opposed to serious work. He has extremely good hand-eye-coordination (from hours of playing video games). He's also physical, but nowhere to the level of most of the people on the barge. (He does his battles in the digital world thank you very much.)

Kevin's most unique trait however is that he doesn't loose. In both Tron and Tron!Legacy he has lost a grand total of twice-but never in relation to gaming or games. He looses in relation to people-and in relation to CLU. Basically, he only looses in relation to himself. He can beat this by paying close attention however. He will have to if he has any hope of rehabilitating his inmate.

Personality: Fans of Tron and the things it's done in today's society are most likely aware of two different versions of Tron and two different versions of the characters. On the one hand, the original tron is flavored with the 1980's optimism. On the other hand, Tron: Legacy and it's eventual sequel takes a far more darker tone then it's predecessor.

That's not to say that the original Tron isn't dark. It deals with some pretty complex themes, but the guy at the heart of it isn't complex in the slightest. Kevin Flynn is a pretty straightforward character. He's the common Disney arch-type of the all around good guy. He's loyal, he's loving, while he has his sarcastic and angry moments they're usually mild and he only swears if the occasion really really calls for it. This is Disney after all.

It's implied that Kevin Flynn's a genius, or if not a genius, very intelligent. Like most very intelligent people, he feels a need to play by his own rules if he finds the rules others set down too boring. He restricts his activities in this area to games however. The idea of creating new worlds is what drives him. Anything that allows him to exercise his creativity is something he actively seeks out. The easiest way to do that is through the computer. Everything else is just a side show.

This is evidenced in the way that he treats his ex-girlfriend Lora. Lora sought out Alan when she was looking for a loving relationship because Kevin was too focused on himself. While he is a loyal and loving guy, he is also egotistical and has a dark side that is made up of being impulsive and reckless-another trait of being smart.

We see his darker side in Tron!Legacy manifested. CLU is obsessed with perfection and constantly struggling against a system that he sees needs change. This is Kevin's dark side, and what people who he can't fix will encounter. He will be overwhelmingly stubborn and possibly yell at them-in the most dire of circumstances.

Slightly self-centered and egotistical, the only reason why he hasn't slipped into demented behavior is because he honestly doesn't have a reason to. He's good at what he does but doesn't feel a desire to surpass anyone. Early on his parents instilled in him the desire to keep on working. This applies to his life in many positive ways, namely that he won't give up and back down. Everything can be saved just like a computer file. He very rarely, if ever, gives up on anyone. More about this can be found Here

The only hot-button issue of his is people who attempt to steal his work. That causes him to revert to his dark side-the stubborn and egotistical individual who thinks he's better then everyone. He is extremely overprotective of his projects. They're good projects (he knows this for sure) but the idea of someone taking them after he poured everything into it is like the idea of Satan taking over the earth. It doesn't work. He hates Ed Dillinger with a passion because of this. When asked about this, Kevin will explain only the work comment and not delve into deeper detail unless really upset. These fits of anger happen in passing however, and he can easily be talked down. It isn't until later (in Legacy) where he actually tries to work out problems in regards to his anger.

Kevin's response is, "You hurt me, let's talk it out unless you hurt me again. “

He will be extremely protective of his inmate. His inmate will become a project of his, so he'll pour everything into him.

He's loyal to a fault, something which earns him friends despite his attitude. Lora dumped him, yet when she is willing to help him. After helping Alan get Tron back, he and Alan are friends right until he disappears in Tron Legacy. Once you have his trust, Kevin will do or die for you and ask nothing in return.

If you had to compare Kevin to an animal, it'd be a golden retriever. He's not particularly violent, very fun loving (He is always up for games, even in the middle of the night) but he can turn threatening when the need arises.

Given that before his arrival to the barge he was inside a computer, he's not going to be particularly phased by the barge. As part of the generation that grew up on Star Wars however, he will be very very interested. After some initial bouncing around he'll attempt to do some real good because Tron and Yori are counting on him at home and, as stated, he never lets down a friend. As to his personal feelings about the barge hey man, everybody's good with him.

Kevin in Legacy
-Included for future plots and posts, canon updates, and general information about the character himself.

Kevin in Legacy differs from this profile only in terms of his ego and his feelings. He has had a million cycles in the grid. He has removed himself from the equation and plays a far more deadly game with CLU. Gone are his good intentions and his need to make the world a better place, he's been defeated by his own creation, and he is tormented by the fact that he cannot do anything about it. The stubborn streak in humans seems to survive even the most terrible torture. After all, the core of most users and programs is the need to be free.

In legacy, we see what happens to Kevin Flynn when he doesn't have anyone to talk him down. CLU is Kevin, so CLU's behavior is how Kevin would have reacted. Thankfully, he has enough friends to make up for it. CLU couldn't have understood it however, being that explaining emotion to a user and emotion to a program are both difficult things.

In legacy, he has removed himself from the equation. He's pretty relaxed because of this. As the cycles have passed however, his relaxation has slipped into disinterest. He's unaware of that because he still feels that it's for the best. However, the combination of loosing and being trapped has made him slightly selfish. His actions are that of a defeated man who does not want to get hurt again. Sam's arrival reminds him that he was a fighter and that he could win again. When he sacrifices himself for his son, it is a pure sacrifice. He is completely and utterly at peace, having risen above both his desire for perfection and his desire to win. He is made of entirely positive aspects, he is free.

He rarely if ever gets angry at the programs and he loses his temper with Sam only once. Comparing him to the Kevin at the barge will be a joke-the two are polar opposites. Kevin from the future will reason with you, Kevin from the past will suggest playing a video game and possibly snap at you. Both are fundamentally good men however, and both will do everything in their power to help you and others around you. If you get Kevin Flynn as a warden, you get a loyal and loving golden retriever dog who will always bring back the frisbee when you throw it...except it might be glowing when you get it back again.

Rehabilitation
As far as his rehabilitation methods go, Kevin is a big supporter of venting anger. He'll suggest doing this with video games. He's not opposed to any sort of game however, and once he has you playing he figures it's a good time to talk. Games open up the mind and allow people to focus on different things. He learned this when he wrote the impossible problems for the Master Control Program, basically "playing" with the MCP in order to distract it so he could learn the information he had to learn.

His methods would differ from inmate to inmate, but once the anger's out he'd encourage his inmate to relax. If he has a tough inmate, he'll play a game and knock him down (he can't lose remember). If he has a gentle inmate, he'll encourage them to let out their bouts of anger and then talk to them about just what's making them upset. Honestly...if it would get an inmate the help they'd need he'd probably go back to their world and volunteer to help them fix whatever problem they had (that impulsive-issue.)

History:

Kevin Flynn was born in Paramus New Jersey in toward the end of the 1940s. He spent a fairly uneventful childhood playing space man and making armor out of cardboard boxes. His father (a writer) and his mother (a college professor) encouraged creative pursuits, but balked when they realized that their son had a very real desire to be active. Kevin played football, partied, and dodged the draft by a narrow margin thanks to going to CalTech.

Honestly, the best way to explain TRON is to Take you to the wiki page and I apologize for that but there's two movies worth of material to cover and it gives far more detail then I ever could.

[There's a click and the video feed is on and suddenly there's a young man with ruffled hair wearing a red shirt and jean jacket. Moving forward, he picks up the camera and pans it around the room. Viewers get unintentional video of a very messy bedroom before he sets it back down and grins.]

Okay, why aren't you guys jumping up and down? We're on a space ship. A space ship. How cool is this? I mean when the admiral guy said we were in space I thought uh...[he shrugs, exaggerated]

But here we are! [he bounces back up] Man, this is the neatest thing I have ever seen. It ranks with Sony's trinitron monitors. And then there's this thing- [he picks up the communicator] It's user friendly and the size of a paperweight. How awesome is this? [he laughs] we are light years away from this back home.

Speaking of which. [He sets the camera back down with a thump] Introductions. Okay. I am. [he points at his chest] Kevin Flynn. Creator of Space Paranoids, Lightcycles, and others. Yeah, I wrote those games, don't listen to what history tells you.

[He scratches his head] So I made a deal with the Admiral which is really kind of important. I mean lives depend on it guys. I'm not saying anyone else's deal isn't important! [he waves his hands ] I just uh-y'know-I've sort of had a really crazy 48 hours that range from finding out programs live in a different world to giant space ships....but I'll tell you about that later if you're interested.

Qualifications! [He makes an A-HA! face] I'm a doctor. Not an MD but like a...PHD. I got it in computer science and programming. The class was easy. I recommend it if bored. [he snorts] I certainly was. Greatest programmer CalTECH has ever seen gets written up for hacking the laboratory computers and changing...

[he bites his lip] yeah.

If this little guy is any indication however? I'd like to rent out my computer services. Apparently I am...really behind on technical stuff and I want to see if I can still even navigate my way around a computer system. [he grins] Then again, it looks like a standard user interface. The monitors though are neat So thin.

...I think...that's it. Um. Except Admiral? Can I get a mini-fridge? If not that's totally cool. I run on coca cola.

[He frowns] Right. Okay. Uh. I'll take questions.

[There is a pause]

Hello? [he taps the device again] I really hope I didn't break it.

Sample RP:

Kevin turned off his communicator and padded to the door to the barge proper, trying to sort out his impressions. He had been holding Ram before letting him gently slip through his hands as he'd crumbled into star dust and the guy had shown up.

The Guy. He couldn't even tell he was a dude. He looked like something that belonged on the Grid and didn't and...

It was fuzzy. A bad night at the arcade fuzzy, the night Lora dumped him fuzzy. He'd said the first thing that came into his head bring Ram back because the poor guy didn't deserve a death like that. He was a user. He should have been able to do something.

Is this guy a user for m.. He didn't finish the thought as he closed the door to his room and pulled on a jacket. He changed his shoes to a pair of red converse. He studied the shoes for a moment. They were his favorite-he'd worn them to his graduation, wore them the day he'd met Lora ...

I should've won them last night. Kevin shook his head and tied the laces. He stood and stretched before straightening a few toys on his desk. He shot an angry look at the ceiling, "You'd better make sure everything goes back to normal when you put the room back."

He paused, "And that time actually stops."

It was like an intuitive sixth sense-the idea that time stopped. He knew he was in no danger, the guy wanted his help and somewhere somebody needed help. He was good at helping (always had been) and he could use all the good karma he could get if he ended up back facing the MCP. Thoughts of the MCP made him stop however. He sat back on the bed.

The MCP. A program he'd helped create that had apparently lost it's mind. He hadn't thought of it as something that would have a mind, but the computer had parts of him in it. It's cruelty and maliciousness...how much of that was him?

It's mostly Dillinger.

That made him feel better. Dillinger was a scummy worm who'd be capable of doing something like oppressing thousands of computers. It might even have been a class in itself but it was a computer...

And you're on a space ship.
He snorted, "Well shoot. That kind of invalidates the argument doesn't it?"

That meant programs had actual personalities. That people programmed bits of themselves, that there was no LIMIT to what a computer could accomplish. They could do anything they were told to do.

People were an entirely different matter. He'd been good with people-easy going and easy to make friends with. Sure he could be stubborn but Lora nonwithstanding...

He shook it out of his head. Straightening his jacket he hopped to his feet and opened the door. Grinning, he looked back at the neon room and shrugged his shoulders before heading out into the boat.
