why I miss college: I don't have anyone to bounce ideas off of.
Case in point
Net Neutrality is a good thing, its something that we can all enjoy and love.
Problems: It keeps getting shot down for some reason.
What net neutrality would do is make all information on the internet free to anyone and the ISPs can't block certain websites for whatever reasons.
The reason we want this is:
If MSN decides that it doesn't want its users to go to Google, it can stop its users from accessing Google. Or, conversely, if it wants Youtube to pay them a fee or else they won't carry Youtube, it can.
Think cable TV, some areas don't have certain channels because they don't wanna pay for 'em.
Net Neutrality would not allow this.
I think we can all agree it would be a great thing.
But what if stopping Net Neutrality backfires?
What if, say, MSN decides to actually do what it can do and stops you from accessing Yahoo. In their eyes, they hope that you'll stop using Yahoo and use MSN instead. But what might occur is something far worse for MSN than they expected. Millions of people use Yahoo, a lot of people use it for e-mail or just to search the web. My ex used it instead of Google, and i assume others do too. Now MSN will have a backlash from it's people and will have to allow Yahoo. Or people will switch and MSN will lose funds. In the end Yahoo wins.
But no one would be stupid enough to block the major websites; so let's try something smaller... let's go with deviantArt. Let's say AOL blocks deviantArt because it won't pay them a small fee. Let's say deviant's AOL population isn't large enough to create enough of a ruckus and AOL upholds their decision. A company like Google, who is completely and utterly for Net Neutrality, can say, "well, now your customers can't access me or companies aligned with me like Youtube, until you make accessible deviantArt. Then users at AOL who love Google because it is god's gift to the internet, will cause more of a ruckus, and blockage removed.
I'm not sure what terms deviantArt and Google are on and people on AOL don't matter, but it's the idea. once a company starts enforcing their ability to block Internets from people, stuff will happen to stop it. A mighty internet war that will make the great Ebaum's vs Internet struggle look like a kid's water balloon fight.
Still, I support net neutrality and fear what fascism could occur if it's not instilled, but i have faith in the internets... just let them try to block pornography and all their supporters will leave.
