Twenty years
Your buddy lied.
The freaking pills were everywhere and he never said a word.
Was it really necessary for you to go there and find them? Yes. There was no other way.
Wordy should have talked. You’re a team. You’re family. How the hell could he keep it a secret? Didn’t he know that there were people who cared about him? People who might even get hurt because of him keeping his mouth shut?
Screw the responsibility issues, the I-want-to-be-the-best-for-you-guys excuse. The truth comes first, always. Wordy owed that to the team at the very least but surprisingly even the boss seemed to forget about that, too.
The expected heated discussion and Wordy’s sincere apology were the end of it. The tension broke your heart but you had to accept that it was over. He would just let go of a lifetime full of achievements and turn them into memories.
Finally, he’d leave you and the job behind.
Twenty years sharing life do matter, but they can’t stop people from moving forward.
Twenty years.
Twenty damn years and your buddy is gone, back where he belongs - with his beautiful wife and his wonderful children.
You wish you were that brave.
The End.
