travel woes

so i left manchester this morning about 9 (after barely sleeping at all) and i was supposed to get to worthing (a town slightly west of brighton) about four hours later, but there's lots of rain happening right now in england, so i got here about four. i've had exactly one croissant to eat today, along with a cup of coffee and about a third of a coke. that's nutrition! we sat on the tracks at clapham junction for two hours because all the rail lines south were closed due to flooding. people kept getting on and off the train and the conductor stopped updating so rumours circulated. it was annoying, but also sort of ok. i mean, i'm on vacation, right? (not that there isn't work i should be doing... as usual.) and my ipod battery lasted 7 hours without totally dying, which is gratifying.

but on the train i discovered a soda had broken open inside my computer bag. oh, delight. the computer's fine, being in a seperate compartment, but the soda stained my american passport. the american passport people can be very touchy about that sort of thing so i'm worried about it. the liquid also destroyed three books. three books! including one that i absolutely must have while i'm here, to work. i mean, it's readable, but gross, and i'll have to throw it away afterwards. also, i am an idiot; who puts a soda /inside/ a computer bag? good thing i didn't put it on the other side of the bag on top of the camera.

and of course i got to the hotel after all this and dad had booked it with his credit card but not paid up front, and you have to pay up front, so i had to use my card. bye bye, money i can't afford to spend.

i'm going into brighton. everyone i know is either gone or working tonight, i think, but dammit, i'm going into brighton. for one thing, food would probably be a good idea at this juncture. even though brighton on a friday night in july is going to be insane and all the restaurants will be packed with drunken tourists.

i'm actually quite cheerful to be here. the channel is outside my window. the downs were rolling by the train tracks. i feel like i'm home. of course, i have to leave in 2 weeks to go back to that other place that's supposed to feel like home.
