Review a movie?
...why not?
"The Notorious Bettie Page.
Fell asleep halfway through itself. Infuriating, really, for those who were Awake and There and Waiting but instead of going anywhere, it simply held us at a certain level of disappointment throughout.
Carefully wavering between anti-climatic and utter inoffensiveness, it kind of crept through the story with its arms at its sides and its eyes looking straight ahead. "Please do not examine anything on your way through the plot. Thank you for watching our 'biopic.' "
However, there are two scenes at the beginning which duck under the velvet ropes and leave you with a very uncomfortable feeling at their close. But what happens in them is never really dealt with or even brought up - as an explanation for her personal beliefs or otherwise.
If you haven't seen it, borrow it, because as harsh as I'm being here, there are some worthwhile moments. Gretchen Mol does an unnerving job at capturing the poses and mannerisms of the model, and there are some very well-done (as well as famous) shots to be seen.
As a segue between scenes, the audience is occasionally allowed to see real footage of some of the bondage videos that Bettie Page performed in. These scenes sum up my position of the movie: Since video porn was a much more illicit and taboo subject at the time (bondage especially), the films are choppy and awkward and strange to watch. However they do offer an odd charm to them, an earnest belief in something beyond campy films and "unusual costumes".
Everyone is portrayed as simply messing around with a few hard-working actors and photographers, they just happen to be wearing lingerie at the time.
Again, its worth at least one viewing, but if you're a real fan, which I am not, don't keep your expectations too high. "
Well, that was fun.
