Kazuki wakes up when he felt the gust of wind completely opening his slightly opened balcony door.

Rain must be coming...

Kazuki removes his blanket, takes his bunny slippers, grabs his cigarette box and walks to the door. His half naked body glistening with the moon's reflection, his beautiful hair flows as if he didn't lie on his bed for hours.

Dang. Just walking to the door is gonna fully wake me up.

He steps out the door, he loves how the breeze is touching him, he takes a cigarette on his mouth and lights it when he saw someone move from the balcony across him.

"Manabu?"

"H-hey, Kazuki... I-it's 3 in the morning... shouldn't you be sleeping?"

"Shouldn't you be too?"

Manabu answered with a faint smile that Kazuki could've missed if he wasnt looking, he also saw him sigh.

"Good morning Kazuki... I'm turning in." Manabu turns his back and returns to his room.

Kazuki and Manabu had been neighbors for as long as they know it, their parents were college buddies that decided to live close to each other when they all got married. Kazuki and Manabu are only sons of each family.

Kazuki grins. He remembered how his mother joked that it was fate that he and Manabu were born a day after the other, him being older by 23 hours and 56 minutes, exactly. His mom said Kazuki was born earlier so he can watch after Manabu.

Kazuki takes the last puff of his cigarette and returns to his room.

-----

"Who's there?!"

Manabu jumps out of bed when he heard something or someone moving outside his balcony. Manabu takes a baseball bat leaning against the wall near his bed, he knows he's a bit frail but if he goes down, at least he defended himself. And hopefully adrenaline will rush in.

"Not gonna kill me with that are you?"

"Kazuki?"

Manabu puts down the bat to see Kazuki stepping inside his room from the balcony, this time wearing his pajama top.

"You never change, you still don't lock your door." Kazuki closes the door behind him and looks around the room.

"Neither do you. If you're here to check the lock, i got it covered..." Manabu walks back to his bed and covers himself with his blanket, "Go home now."

Kazuki walks to where Manabu is lying and squeezes himself on the bed that Manabu has outgrown making it a bit small for the both of them to sleep on.

"Go home, Kazuki!" Manabu pulls the blanket off Kazuki, suggesting that the older man should leave his room.

"Let me sleep here! Hear that? It's already raining. I'll just show myself out later." Kazuki grabs the blanket again, covering half of his body, turning his back from Manabu.

Manabu sighs, he and Kazuki were always friends, but this a bit weird now. They have somehow stopped relating to each other when they entered high school, when they started befriending other people, started dating other people and before their very eyes, the two of them have drifted apart. This is actually the first time in three years that Kazuki has sneaked his way to Manabu's room again.

"Manabu... still awake?"

"...yeah."

"Are you and... what's his name... Nobu... well, are things going well with the both of you?"

Manabu turned silent, his breathing became heavy, "... we broke up today." His voice broke out, he started crying. Although they've been almost strangers, Manabu has always found comfort when Kazuki is around. He felt Kazuki's body turn, his hand landing on his back, rubbing it, consoling him.

"...I'm pretty sure he'll be back. You're a great person, no guy in his right mind will not want you."

"He wont... I just found out he was cheating on me for a year now..."

"That bastard! You've gone out for almost three years right?"

"...yeah..."

"Shh... calm down.." Manabu kept crying, with Kazuki's comforting hand, he felt safe, like he always had. When they were kids, as soon as Kazuki realizes that there will be rain, he'd climb up Manabu's balcony and comfort him, for Manabu had always feared thunderclouds, and it's been Kazuki's habit that for him, climbing up Manabu's balcony is as easy as taking a walk. That's the reason why their balcony doors are never locked, so when it felt like rain, Kazuki can dash out of his room and climb up to Manabu's.

-----

Manabu wakes up alone later that morning, his balcony door is wide open, letting the morning breeze and sunshine in, he stretches his arms, for some reason, the breakup yesterday didn't feel as bad as he thought it would be. Manabu heads downstairs to grab breakfast when he found Kazuki sitting with his parents on the dining table.

"Manabu, Kazuki came over this morning for you. He said he wants you and him to go to school together." His mother sits across his father on the table.

"Ok." Manabu sits down beside Kazuki who passed him the cereal box. "You still love this?" Kazuki asks, looking at Manabu who's filling his bowl to almost overflowing.

"Yeah." Kazuki pours milk on Manabu's bowl and eats a spoonful from it. "HEY! Get your own Kazuki, this is mine."

"You two better hurry up or you'll both be late." Manabu's dad says as he shoves the broadsheet from his face and drinks his coffee.

-----

"So... why are you doing this?" Manabu asks as they make their way to their school.

"You're my friend, isn't that reason enough?" Kazuki smiles, Manabu wonders how his friend grew to become so carefree, so jolly and so... popular, while he became so timid, so engrossed with studying, his future and Nobu. Wait. Maybe his life mainly revolved around Nobu.

"Someone might get jealous with you doing this with me."

"Hahaha! Manabu! I don't have anyone in particular. I'm everybody's man. I please everyone, nobody owns me."

"...Haven't you been in love?" Manabu felt awkward asking this that he didnt even look at Kazuki.

"I've always been in love. Come on, we'll be late."

-----

For the days that followed, Manabu and Kazuki had become inseperable. Kazuki showing up on their front door to walk him to school, or if it's a bit early, he eats breakfast with his family.

"So, Manabu, are you dating Kazuki now?" Jin asks him while waiting for their professor to arrive.

"No. We're just friends, we grew up together."

"we never knew you two grew up together." Yuuto munches on a sandwich, giving its half to Jin.

"You know... Nobu's been asking around about you and Kazuki, it seems he broke up with Tatsuya, maybe Nobu's looking for a reconciliation...?"

"I dont know Jin. He lied to me and broke my heart... But I dunno. he's my first boyfriend after all."

-----

Manabu walks out to the schoolgate, a huge smile showing across his face when Kazuki greeted him.

"Let's go home." Kazuki holds out his hand, Manabu was about to take it when Nobu runs to him.

"Manabu, let's talk."

"....Nobu..."

"Are you two together?"

"Yes." Kazuki answers, without batting an eyelash and he takes Manabu's hand.

"What? No! What are you saying, Kazuki?" Manabu releases his hand from Kazuki then faces Nobu, "He is just fooling around."

"...but I'm not. I told you. I've always been in love." Kazuki walks away, leaving Manabu in silence and in confusion. His words echo in his head, he tries to grasp its true meaning and if meant anything for the both of them.

-----

Manabu waited that night for Kazuki to come over, but he didn't. The next morning, no Kazuki came to steal his breakfast, no Kazuki walked him to school, to his classroom and especially no Kazuki to greet him by the front gate to go home with.

And it happened again the next day. And the next. And the next that Manabu stopped counting, he just knows that every passing day, he misses it. What Kazuki has done for him in the past few weeks made him happy, he felt protected, he felt the security he's had when he was a kid. He looked outside, he wanted to make sure that Kazuki is home. And fortunately he is.

-----

Manabu struggled to reach the ledge of Kazuki's balcony, he never knew how hard it will be to climb someone's wall, let alone the balcony, and his height isn't helping at all nor the vines that kept tangling on his feet. Manabu is now panicking, it's 2 in the morning, if someone sees him, he'll look like a burglar, but he's stuck, and he's getting really frustrated to even think clearly when he saw a hand reach out to him.

"You do know it takes years of training to do this kind of stuff..." Manabu smiles, he loved how any words coming from Kazuki makes him happy, he takes his hand and Kazuki pulls him up.

"Do you know how noisy you are? You woke me up." Kazuki lights up a cigarette, he offers one to Manabu who refused.

"So.. are you and Nobu back together?"

Manabu was brushing himself to remove the dusts and dried leaves that settled on him, "No, I didn't go back to him. Kazuki... What you said that day..." Manabu stops what he's doing and just looked at the other man before him.

Kazuki turns his gaze away from Manabu, "It's true, I told you. I've always been in love. With you. I.. I was just waiting for the right time to tell you, but before I could, Nobu came. You were happy. I... I watched you from afar Manabu, making sure he makes you happy, because I wasn't able to do it in time. I was late then..." Kazuki puffs on his cigarette, its gray ashes falling, just as Manabu's tears slowly and silently does.

"When he broke your heart, I wanted to beat the lights out of him, but I was sure you'd be mad at me for that so I just made sure I make you happy and safe. I wanted to make up for the lost time and regrets..." Kazuki continues, the last burning ash of his cigarette had died, he throws it out and faces Manabu, who placed his hands over his mouth to prevent any sound escaping as he whimpers.

"Manabu... it's your turn to at least say anything." Kazuki fixes his eyes on the floor, he readies himself for Manabu's words of rejection.

"Stupid. Why didn't you tell me sooner? We could've spent those three years together already." Manabu sniffles, he stopped crying and started snickering.

"What?" Kazuki raises his head, his eyes widened in surprise, one eyebrow raised higher than the other.

"Nobu is my first boyfriend... but, you're my first love." Manabu smiles, Kazuki steps closer to him, wiping the tears that has almost dried up on his face. "What?"

"Sleep over." Kazuki smiles, takes his hand and pulls him inside the room. Kazuki jumps onto the bed, Manabu follows him and lies beside him. The older man carefully places the blanket over them.

"It will rain in a while..." Kazuki whispers to his ear.

"How do you know?"

"Years of training, heheh." He pulls Manabu closer to him, the latter lays his head on Kazuki's arm, who plays with the strands of hair that has fallen over Manabu's face.

"You know... this is actually the first time I'm sleeping over here..."

"I'll make sure it wont be your last." Kazuki places his hand on Manabu's cheek, slightly tilting the younger man's face upwards, his head bending forward so that his lips can reach the lips of the person he longed to kiss, he presses himself against Manabu, ever so careful, ever so sweet, he wanted to make sure that the first kiss they share reveals all the feelings he's hidden for so long.

Kazuki breaks away, smiling, finally, no need to watch from afar.

Manabu presses his head on Kazuki's chest, finally, no more waiting.
