Part 3 - Erased
Ienzo. Ienzo. Ienzo.
He repeated his name to himself again and again as he stumbled through the door and back into the strange place he'd awoken in first. He was Ienzo. He couldn't forget that. Why hadn't he known before? Why hadn't he remembered?
Why couldn't he remember anything?
It hadn't occurred to Ienzo to panic before he'd known his name. He hadn't been aware that there was anything wrong with him. That maybe he was missing something.
Dear gods, if he'd forgotten his own name, what else had he forgotten? He couldn't remember anything, it was all gone. He hadn't been aware there was supposed to be something there in the first place. He scrambled to his feet and began to walk, then to run.
He had forgotten his own name.
Not only that, but he'd forgotten it so completely that he'd been sure he'd never had one! How was that possible? How was that right?
How much of him had been erased?
What if he forgot again?
He couldn't do this. Couldn't couldn't could not -
Ienzo stumbled. Fell. The ground didn't scrape as it jarred against his skin.
Something was digging into his palm. He looked down, held it up. The pendant. Myde had given it to him.
The thought of the blond calmed him a bit. Myde seemed familiar, somehow. Now that he had his name back. Felt like they knew each other, somehow.
"To remember me by," Myde had said when he gave Ienzo the pendant.
Remember. Yes. He wouldn't forget Myde, not with this to remind him. And as long as he remembered Myde he'd remember himself. Ienzo relaxed, letting out a small sigh.
Now then, where was he?
Ienzo glanced around, taking stock of his surroundings. None of these doors looked familiar . . . . then again, in this strange place, that wasn't saying very much. Who knew what else lurked behind them?
On the other hand, it had been venturing into one of the door-worlds that had gotten his name back, so perhaps it was a risk he had to take. Anything to remember who he was again. The emptiness was unnerving.
Ienzo hung the necklace around his neck and strode towards the nearest door. White, with embossed silver patterns on it. Looked safe enough. He reached for the knob, opened the door, walked in -
- and gave off a surprised shout as he suddenly found himself falling. Whatever he'd expected, it certainly hadn't been that.
Something light and fluffy broke his fall face-first, shifting to accommodate his weight. Ienzo silently thanked whatever higher power happened to be listening as he panted, slowly regaining his breath and composure. Finally he rolled over onto his back, gulping in the fresh air gratefully.
He was greeted by the sight of a rather familiar face, and instantly sat up, staring at the other incredulously. "Myde?"
The other boy blinked, a rather quizzical expression on his face. "Yes, that's me."
Ienzo stumbled up, still a bit wobbly from the shock of a near-death experience. "But what are you doing here? I thought you were -"
"Um, 'scuse me," Myde cut him off, "but who are you and why do you know my name?"
It was Ienzo's turn for confused expressions. "But . . . . Myde, don't you remember? It's me, Ienzo . . . ."
"Well . . . ." Myde smiled brightly. "No, can't say that I do. It's nice to meet you, though, Ienzo! So, what're you doing here, anyway?"
"But . . . . you . . . ." Ienzo's brain wasn't handling this too well, it seemed. Myde didn't remember him. The one person he knew . . . .
"Say," Myde said with a worried expression, "I really do hope you're not a demon. They're not all that welcome around here."
Ienzo fainted.
