Character Name: The Medicine Seller “Kusuri-uri” Character Journal: 00medicine_man Fandom: [Star of] Mononoke [Makes Guest Appearances In] Ayakashi Canon Background and Personality: The Medicine Seller has no name, though I will sometimes call him Kusuri-uri. He seemingly does not age and it would appear that he is not human either, or at least not completely, as he has pointed ears and fangs. (Though, vampire? No, I don’t think so. xD)
He travels from place to place exorcising mononoke and ayakashi from people, places and things. In order to fully understand the situation, he must first know the Form (Katachi), Truth (Makoto) and Regret (Kotowari) of the mononoke. Once these three things have been identified, he is able to use a special blade called a Taima Sword that, when released, brings forth his Other Self to destroy the mononoke and release its hold on any given person, place or thing. (Note: I will refer to this Other Self in capital letters as though it is a name.) [Their life story and a little bit about how they act and what their motivations are will mostly inferred by me as they do not give much indication in the series.]
Kusuri-uri seems to be only motivated towards releasing the world of its hidden plights which have been given form into mononoke. This however does not in any way mean he is trying to help human beings. In fact, it is actually the mononoke he is trying to save, as they are only created from the hate and misdeeds of humanity and do not wish to haunt and hate as they do. His personality is unpredictable and witty, smart and generally detached from the humans he has to usually work with in order to find out the Form, Truth, and Regret [“FTR” for short] of the mononoke in question (with some exceptions, as he’s known to flirt, flatter or socialize in order to disarm and unsettle someone, usually girls and women who become attracted to him). Strangely enough, in the Umibozu Arc when the ayakashi asked the passengers to tell it their fears, the Medicine Seller calmly answered that he was afraid that there was no form, truth, or regret at the edge of the world, thus he would no longer have a reason to exist. This could imply that his purpose for existing is to exorcise mononoke, in which case, if all the mononoke were to be destroyed, he may die or no longer cease to exist.
As for his Other Self, I don’t know much information about him besides the fact that he seems to be something like a god or spirit or perhaps even a shinigami deity which the Medicine Seller transforms into upon unsheathing the blade that they are connected through for an exorcism. The two seem to be completely separate entities able to combine in order to accomplish their given task. Not much more I can elaborate on at the moment, however the Other Self seems very protective of the Medicine Seller to the point of getting... defensive and a bit possessive should anything happen to him. Since the Medicine Seller sometimes acts recklessly in battle and gets injured, the Other Self becomes irritable and when finally released is somewhat more aggressive than usual to the mononoke that harmed the Medicine Seller (even if it was probably his fault lol~).
In-game occupation and/or location: post!BakeNeko Arc. Medicine Seller and Exorcist. Naiad. In-game Background: In the game I plan to have him accidentally land in Naiad, having chased something powerful, probably a mononoke, from his previous world and lost it in the forest surrounding the town. In trying to locate it again, he senses that this world might be more abundant with powerful vengeful beings than the one he last inhabited. Somewhat overjoyed to find out he’ll be busy, he decides to stay in this world in order to destroy the mononoke and ayakashi haunting it. However, just before he can get close enough to confront the creature that brought him there, it opens another portal which he falls through landing in... Yuuko's house. From there, he will try to find a way back to Naiad in order to exorcise the mononoke.
Since he has no means to dimensional travel, he will have to rely on Yuuko in order to do so. The price he will pay to be able to travel to another world of his choice will be to give up his immortality. And for the price of a small ICD = one scale.
I might let the chase for this particular mononoke run for a while within Naiad, in which case he may come across other mononoke and ayakashi to contend with and possibly join with others on his search to destroy them. I figure to make him a traveler between the worlds later on where he will go around exorcising the mononoke of the other five worlds. Since his first experience with Yuuko will prove to be, unsettling (losing his immortality and such), he will most likely try to team up with someone else who can move freely across worlds to prevent losing something of further value to him.
Items he has on him/in him: his mononoke-slaying sword/blade (Taima Sword), kimono, small round red stud earrings, a ring on his index finger, a large wooden box he carries on his back with a million and one trinkets inside, medicines and potions he’s made and collected from all around the world(s) (bottom drawer), sake bottles (bottom drawer), his porn books (HAHA DON’T ASK! I don’t think they’re his... third drawer from the bottom), his scales which tell the direction of the mononoke as well as forces Truth out of an individual (second drawer from the bottom), ofuda, smoking pipe, ...probably other things but that’s all I can remember. He’s got a lot of stuff in that box of his.
Sample post: The creature made a mad dash down the streets of Fujiyoshida, breaking the line of buildings for the Aokigahara forest near Mt. Fuji. As it ran, blood dripped from its jowls and dotted the ground in scarlet. The Medicine Seller was hot on its trail, running with almost inhumane speed on his wooden geta. His blade, unsheathed and rattling, clutched in his hand. The beast let out a howl that chilled him to the bones and he abruptly stopped infront of the train tracks as the railing came down. A train pasted, hurtling over the tracks and barred him from his target.
He heaved a deep breath. That was definitely an Inugami, he thought frantically as he watched the train cars fly by him all too slowly for his liking. He was almost tempted to start tapping his foot impatiently. That thing was getting away because of this train.
You mean it wasn’t because of you and your incompetence?
He looked down at the blade rattling in his hand, its monstrous face cackling at him as though it were laughing at his misfortune. He clutched the sheath within his fist, a tight sneer pulling at his lips.
“I didn’t see you helping.”
The last train car flew past him with a heavy clanking of metal and steel. He looked up quickly as the railroad crossing dividers lifted, scanning the area on the other side of the tracks and saw something move out of the corner of his eye. Without a second thought, he began pursuit, whipping out his ofuda and flinging them towards the creature. It howled vociferously as if in pain from the magic of the paper bindings, wailing up towards the moon.
The Medicine Seller calmly began to walk over to the fallen creature. Its Form-a dog of bear-like size with a mouth nearly as big as his box-finally revealed.
”It’s not often that the Form be the last of the truths to reveal itself to me. Such a pity too. I was beginning to enjoy the chase.” The Taima Sword lifted out of his hands and began to float above his head hovering an inch above his uplifted fingers. “But now that your Form, Truth, and Regret are revealed to me, I can no longer allow you exist in this world.”
Notes: There isn’t much known about these characters so some things I will make-up or infer, but I will try my best to keep him as in-character as possible. However, SOME THINGS WILL BE OF MY OWN CREATION/INTERPRETATION, especially regarding his Other Self and their connection to the Taima Sword.
About the FTR: The Form the mononoke takes on comes from the hatred and grudge it has against humans. Until its true Form is revealed, no one will be able to see it (or see it for what it truly is as it might disguise itself as someone or something else). Thus to figure out its Form, you must trick it into revealing itself or figure it out on your own and speak its Form’s name. [For example, when Kusuri-uri went up against the BakeNeko, he figured out its Form from some fur it has left on one of the bodyguards in the room when it attacked. He then spoke its name and it was revealed to them.] The Truth is the reason why the incident happened, why the mononoke is attacking a certain place/person/object and why it exists. In order to find the Truth, those involved must explain the reason the mononoke is there. The Regret is the truth in your heart. The mononoke does not wish to be turned into a creature of hate and malice. The Regret will be the truth behind its viciousness. Is it truly evil, or simply angry or afraid? Sometimes it needs the one who turned it into a mononoke to tell it that they are sorry or forgive it. This also must be explained by those involved in the mononoke’s existence and is usually done when explaining the Truth. Sometimes the people involved will lie to their last dying breath, refusing to give up the Truth and Regret, thus the mononoke itself might show you its memories or a scene from the past in order to explain for itself. Until the FTR are named, the sword won’t have any power, which means it won’t be able to kill the mononoke or ayakashi. Each time one of the FTR is revealed, the sword’s mouth clinks closed indicating truth from lies. When the FTR are all named, the sword is finally able to be unsheathed and it says, “RELEASE.” (Yes, it talks. The sword. It speaks WORDS. EL OH EL.)
