Dude, birthdays aren't that big a deal. I think it's more about just, y'know, calling/texting/whatever because you want to talk to your friends, not out of some obligatory duty to say, "hey, congratulations on that whole being born thing!"

If there is someone you haven't talked to in four years, missing their birthday isn't going to be that big of a deal. However, and especially for internet friends, you could use on of those calender things... Yahoo! has one, Facebook has two widely-used ones, and LJ itself actually has a birthday notifier option ("Track this user" on info page); if you check your e-mail every day then you will receive reminders there. Of course there are also various ways to set them as text messages; AOL has this one if your account is still active there.
