Hit a bit of a brick wall around Civil War time with the Stringers and John, born 1641, is as far back as I can go for the family surname with any certainty. All leads for Stringers prior to that date draw a blank with no links to my line. It doesn't help that the surname is based on a profession and that the family was/is solidly non-conformist.
So I turned my attention to other branches of the tree. The furthest back I could go before was to the 1500's with a family that was posh enough to be recorded in London - a son of a clergyman who went to Cambridge.
One name that cropped up - marrying into that line- was Patricia Aske and with that a chance to go back further as the current family founded and sponsored a number of schools in London.
The key link was the marriage of Sir Robert Aske to Elizabeth de Clifford in the 15th Century. A few generations back we find the Percys. Yes, Shakespeare fans, THAT family and then a few short hops back to Edward III.
There are probably thousands of people who can claim descent from royalty, but it is fun to trace the line back.
