So what does this change of status mean? I can hardly say what we were before so I find it hard to know what changes to expect with a new status. I wonder now as I set all my dumb little social networking profiles from
In Relationship or Possibly Open to a nice shiney "Single".
I find myself confused by all of this. The culture in which I was raised has all its own definitions of what the words "In a Relationship" and "Single" mean. From my experience, they were defined as such:
In Relationship: Has a Partner often refered to as a "better half" or "girl/boy friend" USUALLY monogamy is implied and or ability to explore other possible, similarly restrictive relationships is restricted.
Single: In a state of lacking such monogamous partner. Free to explore relationships with the possibility of entering into a state of In Relationship.
I find these definitions, although usefull in many ways, they exclude many relationship types. They assume a general limit on the types of relationships available. In fact, I believe that they themselves go as far as to limit the conceptions of what relationships are possible. Our language tends to define the limits of our conceptions.
I have come to a point where the language doesn't fit the conceptions anymore. I am confused as to the meaning of so many things. I find that I am questioning the meaning of everything anyone says about relationships and that I spend more time working out a mutual protocol than actually communicating much.
I feel I am in territory i've never been in before and im left with out a map.
Its ironic that I press the unimportance of labels so much and I'm so upset about a label.
I'm losing scope now so I'm gonna end this entry here.
