so, it's almost time for National Novel Writing Month, and i'm going to be attempting to use this to post pieces from what i work on. here's my proposed plot:
My story will be called "Besieged In the City of Dreams", and the protagonist is Todor, a young Macedonian man who emigrates to Sarajevo in 1984 to pursue an audition with some of the popular bands of Yugoslavia, but while turned down, he is encouraged by his exposure to the talented idols of the time, and caught up in the excitement of life (winter Olympics are held in Sarajevo that year), he stays to pursue a musical career.
The story then follows his life (in excerpts) over the years as he holds various jobs and pursues music as he can, up until the early 1990s when Yugoslavia begins to disintegrate. 1991-2 sees the secession of Slovenia and Macedonia, and Todor is torn between wanting to return to his family in Macedonia and take his loved ones abroad, but remains in Sarajevo with his fiance who refuses to leave her elderly parents, who in turn refuse to leave Sarajevo. His fiance tragically ends up being one of the first to die in the siege of Sarajevo that lasts from 1992-1995, and this is where much of the story may take place, during the siege, and how Todor lives, survives, continues his passion of music, and discovers the good and bad, the humanity and inhumanity that can occur during such hard times.
