Sheldon really regrets ever forcing Penny to watch Battlestar Galactica with him. Initially, it had been payback. She had grown impatient on laundry night when he had a particularly large batch to do, and had removed his clothing from the washing machine prematurely. As retaliation, he forced her to sit down and watch the opening mini-series that started the re-vamped sci-fi show.
Somehow, this has spiraled into weekly marathons, in which they watch one disc of his DVD set. Now they're almost on the cusp of finishing season 4.0, and Sheldon is thinking this has all been a big mistake.
Penny actually enjoys the show. What kind of retaliation is that? He forces her to take part in one of his loves, and she ends up embracing it? What's worse is that she doesn't enjoy it for the science, the philosophy or sociological commentary, no. She enjoys it for the romance.
Yes, this is the worst form of retaliatory action he's ever taken against someone. And that includes making Leonard eat a slice of cheese as penance for taking the last Diet Coke. That had only punished them both, in the end.
Penny's beside him on the couch now, curled into his side and sniffling at the goings-on on the screen. Admiral William Adama has just found the Cylon base ship where President Laura Roslin is being held hostage, after recently confessing to his son that he's unable to live without her.
"Missed you."
"Me too." They hug, both of them quite emotional. Roslin closes her eyes... "I love you."
Adama pulls back and smiles. "About time."
"Oh my God, that is so beautiful," Penny gushes from beside him, still sniffling and sounding as though she could burst into tears at any moment.
"It's not beautiful," Sheldon sighs, "It's downright silly. He has a fleet to oversee and he's frittering away his time falling in love with the President of the Twelve Colonies!"
"Don't you see how beautiful that is? They started off at each other's throats, always fighting, always trying to dominate the other..."
Sheldon chuffs. That's what he and Penny do, but there's hardly any romance to it.
"...And then, slowly, they reached an understanding, found a balance. They formed a friendship."
He's never considered that before. That aspect also seems to parallel his initially-tenuous relationship with Penny, the slow evolution into a friendship.
Penny keeps right on going. "Then, before you know it, they're flirting with each other on New Caprica and-and... snuggling and stuff, and eventually they fall in love."
Sheldon glances warily down at their positioning in this very moment, Penny cuddled against him still snuffling into her kleenex.
"It's just so romantic," she sighs, and leans her head on his shoulder. "I mean, she's his 'sine qua non' - 'without which not,' right?"
As she says this, her hand curls itself around his forearm and gives a light squeeze, and Sheldon ponders the concept of 'sine qua non.' That without which one cannot live. Could he live without Penny?
"Can we watch the New Caprica one again?" she asks as the credits finish rolling. "From season three? I really liked that one."
Yes, he decides, he can currently live without Penny. Especially if she keeps making him watch all of the mushy romantic moments between Adama and Roslin endlessly.
"Fine."
Though as she jumps up to put in the disc, Sheldon considers the fact that even a war-hardened Admiral had been susceptible to falling in love.
"Ready, sweetie?" Penny flops down and curls into his side again, smiling sweetly at him.
"Yes." Maybe this means even he, Sheldon Lee Cooper, is not exempt from falling, either.

And y'know, I honestly thought of adding a line at the end about Sheldon not wanting to spoil the Adama/Roslin ending for Penny, but I left it out. Poor girl, lol - she'd be as broken up as I was.
