The Twin-Verses

"All that we are is the result of what we have thought: it is
founded on our thoughts, it is made up of our thoughts. If a man speaks
or acts with an evil thought, pain follows him, as the wheel follows the
foot of the ox that draws the carriage.
All that we are is the result of what we have thought: it is
founded on our thoughts, it is made up of our thoughts. If a man speaks
or acts with a pure thought, happiness follows him, like a shadow that
never leaves him.
"He abused me, he beat me, he defeated me, he robbed me,"--in
those who harbour such thoughts hatred will never cease.
"He abused me, he beat me, he defeated me, he robbed me,"--in
those who do not harbour such thoughts hatred will cease.
For hatred does not cease by hatred at any time: hatred ceases by
love, this is an old rule."

Hatred ceases by love. This is an old rule. "The world does not know that we must all come to an end here; --but those who know it, thier quarrels cease at once." They cease at once -- This is the wisdom the twin verses are attempting to impart to us. All things follow from thought -- Karma, good and evil-- all come from intention. Watch what you think- encourage pure thoughts while alleviating those that cause pain. Do not water the seeds of anger any longer- stop nurishing the suffering of the mind, strive to spread compassion to all things and alleivate thier suffering of mind and body.

Yesterday a man was yelling at a child for someting they did not do. I heard the conflict and, in anger, decided I was going to stop this man with force. I approched the man, with violent intent raging in my mind. Rightous justice coursed through my veins. When I got to the scene I saw the man yelling- face red with anger and fustration- and I saw a child crying; doing all he could not to cower- lashing out with venomous words when he felt daring enough. The sight moved me- they did not recognize the mutual suffing they both shared, the suffering they both wanted to get rid of. All it would have taken to break the suffering would have been one compassionate act. "Hatred does not cease by hatred and time: hatred ceases by love, this is an old rule." The violence in my mind was replaced by pity, sorrow for those lost in the jungle of thier own anger. Using compassion, I pulled the man aside; "Subdue your demons, good sir, as I have subdued my own." -- I only wished that I had thought to use the Twin-Verses.
