[ In the dim gloom of his shut-tight sleeping quarters, a pair of wary azures blinked; once, twice - vainly attempting to focus on the dark shapes around him. He was acutely aware of the thudding of his heart, insistent and rather loud in the reticence of the room. Gradually the mysterious shapes began to lose their human-esque form and he was able to identify them for what they truly were. An ancient dresser, a naked lamp, a tiny, battered coffee table... From the window, a ghostly Sephiroth peered in.
The last few remnants of his
dream slithered away from his consciousness... The hungry, glowing eyes, the glimmer of sharp implements and the occasional moving shadows of scientists drifting silent as phantoms through darkening corridors. The lingering echoes of laughter seemed unending. That voice continued its taunt, unrelenting.
Such a perfect little SOLDIER...
Genesis shook away the thoughts, that voice, the apparition his mind had created by the window. His hand shot out, blindly reaching for his NoC atop his nightstand, knocking various items off it so that they landed with a clatter. Finally, his hand closed around it and he brought it to his face, still stricken, lying in bed, tangled up in thin sheets. The transmission was fumbled on and then...
-Silence.
Words had eluded him even as his mind furiously screamed a name. They would not come. For the first time in many, many years he felt his faith shaken, his resolve slowly begin to crumble...piece by piece. The circle was no more. It had gently begun to die the day he'd left, Angeal's own death had finally shattered it and Sephiroth's venomous words to him in that reactor had driven the nails into the coffin. It was never to be opened again, never to be revived. The Trinity. What a joke, a pipe dream. He was just as he'd always been back then; alone.
A lonely star on a collision course. ]
Dreams of the morrow hath the shattered soul.
Pride is lost.
Wings stripped away, the end is nigh...
[ Whispered words melting into nothingness. The Goddess. She would still not look at him. ]
