Madonna on the Superbowl

Feb 06, 2012 21:10

First off, I must say that Madonna is all I tuned in for. She was ABSOLUTELY remarkable, as always. She can put on a fuckin' show and she makes every other woman who now tries to be sexy and unique simply blend in and look trashy and unoriginal. They missed the message Madonna put out over and over, stating, "Own your own power and sexuality."

And I understand these 20 and 30 something-year-old women have asshole publicists telling them to shake around on stage like idiots, but you don't think Madonna had jerks telling her what to do? *rolls eyes* Come on, ladies. Step up.

But on the positive side, Madonna broke the record once again.

She proves over and over that she knows how to do what she does best. Kill it.

On the negative side, there are still sexist assholes who find it funny to degrade a woman because of her age.

What’s so funny about a 53-year old woman performing the half-time show? Tom Petty was 57 and Bruce Springsteen was 59 when they did their respective halftime shows. Must be the ‘woman’ part of the equation, huh?

What does any of this matter, apart from the icky burst of mean spiritedness? It matters because your wives and daughters and sisters and mothers are gonna get older, too, y’all, and they’ll take those kind of cracks seriously. It matters because this ageist mentality translates to the images we send out into the wide world in TV and film, and where we disproportionately prioritize youth we send the message to our young women that they are relevant only briefly and superficially, like shooting stars. Or like pop stars.

Seriously, we're surrounded by idiots.
