TAGS for probably the millionth time asfdharunoOctober 1 2011, 23:16:34 UTC
To paraphrase from the AC post: Perhaps (in both comms) the main poster(s) could be tagged with a !character x, and then the commenters just with their normal tags?
This would be for tracking activity. One of the big complaints I know about this is as follows: We have so many tags used, have a paid account for the main comm to deal with that, and we still have tags for basically every character here from game opening. To get two for each character active in game would mean necessitating the loss of old tags for characters no longer in game, starting with ones not here for some time. Based on the general number floating around, let's say we'd need... roughly seven hundred tags to account for characters currently in game -- one that is such as "!character x", and one that is simply "character x"!
Possible solutions to that include: Indexing old journal names to a character list, deleting old tags, and then for those wishing to read back, searching by journal name. With LiveJournal allowing this search function, it could free up tags to use in the current game environment, without sacrificing the ability to read back on old threads/characters/etc.
But that's work!: It is, and there's two of us at least willing to do that. This wouldn't be an instantaneous change.
But that's work to look up!: How often do you go back and review old tags as it is? The list can be set up to have a link that does the searching for you!
But I have another issue: Speak on it! That's what discussion is for!
Reasoning behind this kind of change/adaptation: accounts for all activity a person tags their character for in a given month. Makes clicking on two tags give quick answers to character activity. There are other benefits but I am distracted and liable to forget them right now.
There are also other issues! Please bring them up, folks!
Yeah, my biggest issue on revamping the tags is that A) we spent weeks going back and retagging all of the old characters so people could look back (either at other characters they liked, or previous iterations of their own character), and B) if we do change it, that means we have to constantly revamp and change the tags to delete people who drop and add people who join, etc etc.
Actually looking now there's more than I thought; I was under the impression we only had 2000, but we have space for 4000 tags. Currently it's a little over halfway full.
So, we do have room to perhaps add a !comment type tag for all the current characters, and only keep up with those? :|a
If that's the case, and should space ever become an issue in the future, we can deal with taking out the oldest tags/least used related to being so old and get that transferred to a linked list so folks can still find those posts if they'd like, but the tag itself doesn't need to exist anymore.
... If that made sense.
I know I'd love to have a way of showing how characters are being active all around/tracking their activity as they comment around. I'd really love this kind of tag system to go into effect.
I wouldn't mind it either - it would make things easier for both us and for people who may need to submit additional activity (or, I guess, if enough people are for it, submitting the entirety of their activity). I'd like to hear more opinions on this *^*
Not only that, but ... can the comm handle having THAT many tags? :P In effect, we'd have to have two for each character ... and I know ParaLogs has too many tags ATM as is.
I have no idea if this makes sense so I apologise.
I think that, if you're going to tag a post (as in, livejournal tag it, not rp tag reply), then all tags should be regular tags, such as "Piper Halliwell", "Haruno Sakura". I say this only because we have a lot of characters already on the tag list and, as someone who cannot get a tag in the log community because my character is brand new and there is no space, I would find it incredibly frustrating if I could not get a tag because of the "! poster identified" and "regular tag" system (i.e. "! Piper Halliwell" "Piper Halliwell"). Not to mention it clogs up the tag list and provides more work when you hit the roadblock of "there is no room in the tag list because we have "!identifier" and "regular"). I speak from experience. In a game I am in, they use this system, and I had to ask the mods what I could do so I wouldn't be penalised/miss out on the tagging.
Maybe we could introduce a system where, if you reply to a post, you tag yourself in. It works in other games, and I find it easy to find my threads if I need to submit AC. It's simple and we can use our already existing tags without flooding it with "!" tags.
I don't think it should be used in the log community. (The ! identifier). It's not a network post. It's not people replying to your post, like you ask a question, my tl;dr understanding of a log is us going out to lunch. It's an interaction. It's not "You're replying to me sitting out at the table when we already agreed to be here" sort of thing. I throw up logs after plotting it out with people because I have the time to. Knowing who posted it just seems pretty redundant to me. If you want to know who started the log, just do url/?poster=username. My opinion on logs belongs in the log thread, but it's just too much work as it is. And since I can't even get a tag for one character in it, it's just going to cause even more problems.
We don't need two tags for one character. Just use one. I've had to search manually for threads before and if this tag system was in place, I would've spent less time looking.
