Five was in the kitchen, fixing up a sandwich to go with his daily perusal of the journal, when he heard the whoosh and grind of the TARDIS engines, and felt her begin to dematerialize.
"What?!"
But the TARDIS couldn't fly herself, certainly, and he didn't know anyone else who could. That left only one rational possiblity, as his mind whizzed in circles, trying to find an answer - he was gone. The castle had kicked him out, and he was home, somehow, and the Time Council on Gallifrey had activated that damned ridiculous recall circuit.
He dropped the sandwich, lettuce and tomatoes scattering across the floor, and RAN for the console room at top speed. "No, no, no, NO - !"
And at the exact moment that it struck him that there was no way he could've been sent home if he remembered not ever having BEEN home to begin with, he reached the console room, and saw the little girl standing on the chair next to HIS console.
River is giggling as her tiny frame clings to the edge of the console while the TARDIS dematerializes. Her big blue TARDIS plushie is sitting safely at the bottom of the console. The whirling of the TARDIS, the whoosh whoosh noise - she doesn't like the noise of the brakes being left on, but her arms weren't long enough to reach over and turn the brakes off. The TARDIS understood though and adjusted it's course to make up for what River couldn't reach. It should have been a far bumpier ride, but she transported them safely enough.
"She wanted to go exploring!" River exclaims as she turns to face the Doctor, her face all wide and full of childish glee. "She said so! She gets ever so bored just sitting around! She said she could take me places..."
Realization slowly dawns in Five's eyes as he realizes exactly who this precocious little ball of glee must be. Eleven had told him about her loss - of course, she'd been just a baby, then, but this is Paradisa, and anything's possible. He moves forward and scoops her up, plushie and all.
"Well, then, River, I can't say no to two of my favorite girls, can I? Where do you suppose we'll end up?"
River looks to be about six or seven years old - that's quite a lot of growing she's done in under a week. She doesn't even seem to realize how unusual her growth spurts are.
She squeals with childish glee when he picks her up, throwing her arms around him, "I don't know. She told me how to make her go....but I couldn't reach all the stuff."
It really is, and if it's any indication toward a trend, he's got a feeling things are only just beginning to get interesting. ... A very sinking feeling. He'll enjoy the glee and the wonder while it lasts, though.
"I suppose we'll find out, then, won't we! That's the best sort of travel, I think. The surprise sort." The TARDIS bucks slightly, and he shifts his weight quickly so as not to drop her.
It's a rare glimpse of the life that River Song could have had. Of what she should have had. A glimpse of the rarest thing of all - innocence. Childish wonder and glee.
"Yeah! I hope it's somewhere exciting!" She's playing with his Celery now...
"I've no doubt it will be." He ruffles her hair as the TARDIS materializes with that soft, echoing thud. "Go on, then -" He sets her down gently, on the floor - "ladies first."
River doesn't have to be told twice. She goes tearing out of the TARDIS control room like a bat out of hell. Coming to a halt after she gets through the doors and sees the pier.
Five's jogging right after her, never afraid of a little running, after all. He beams at the sight of the pier, recognizing it from their arrival at the end of the Pirate excursion.
"Ah, yes! I know exactly where we are. How marvelous." He claps his hands together and gazes out down the pier. "If you're going for a swim, you'll want a suit out of the wardrobe, won't you?"
River really isn't listening to him. She doesn't want to waste time going into the TARDIS and hunting down a swimsuit. Instead, she uses her childish logic and simply transforms her clothes into a swimsuit by diving off the pier with a squeal of delight.
"Or a suit out of thin air, either way," he quipped wryly to himself. A nanosecond later, it occurred to him that being so young, she might not know how to swim yet, and he ran after her, reaching the pier edge just as she hit the water. "RIVER!"
She emerges a few seconds later, doggy paddling a few feet from the pier. Seemingly just fine at swimming. "Come in! Swim with me!" She squeals happily before diving underwater, emerging a few feet further from the pier. She must have gone swimming before.
"Alright, just a tic." He ducks back inside and comes put a few moments later in his swim trunks, trotting down the pier before making a passably graceful dive of his own, coming up beside her.
Her eyes widen when he mentions the mystical creatures, "There are mermaids in here? I wanna see one!" Instantly, she begins to look around. Swimming a bit further out. Ever the adventurous spirit, our River Song.
"Well, I'm not certain. There may be..." He glances around them, realizing how still the water is, save for their - mostly her - cavorting. "Strange, I thought it had a tide, last we were here.... "
"I want to see a mermaid!" She splashes about in further search for such a creature and pouts when she finds nothing and no one there, except the two of them. "Can I wish to be a mermaid, Doctor? Can I? I think I'd like to be one!"
"What?!"
