It had all happened so quickly and unexpectedly that it took Naruto quite some time to even realize he was walking outside by Sasuke, heading toward the forest for some training exercises. Days had gone by without a word from the Uchiha and Naruto literally felt like shit, to be frank. Naruto knew Sasuke was pushing him away now but knowing so did not make the act itself hurt any less. Sasuke had apparently been so serious that he did not even stay in the castle anymore at regular intervals, and after a week or so of not showing up to his own room anymore, he discouraged Naruto to stay any longer. Naruto had hoped some part of Sasuke would return one day, realizing there was nothing wrong in doing so and merely sleeping there, if anything, but faith left him quickly and he packed his own belongings to return to room 504.

Still, Naruto returned every day with the excuse that he had to water the tomato plant he had given as a gift to Sasuke... something that felt like it happened ages ago. The plant was already fully in bloom and growing healthily, and Naruto made sure to take deep care of it for as long as it would withstand its confined space. While his body moved to do such a simple task, the rest of him knew the real reason why he could not stay away was because he wanted to see Sasuke again. Maybe, just maybe, he would be lucky enough to catch him in the act of returning. Naruto had even left the fort as it was, deciding not to demolish it just in case.

He happened to be watering the tomato plant the very day that Sasuke came back to his room. It had shocked him and a glimmer of hope washed through him all over again, but was then stomped on as Sasuke had said he only returned for a book he left behind and needed.

So a book was more important than their friendship?

Strangely enough, he also suddenly asked Naruto to join him in his training that late afternoon, and Naruto immediately agreed despite the fact that he was in absolutely no mood to do hectic physical work, least of all with Sasuke. He didn't want it to turn into a full blown fight. That was one of his biggest fears. If it could be helped, Naruto never seriously wanted to fight Sasuke again. Ever.

That was why he was left in a daze as they walked outside, Naruto trying to reflect on what this meant but failing to find a good enough answer. Maybe Sasuke was just bored. Maybe he needed a sparring partner and knew Naruto was the only one closely matched enough to make a difference. Whatever the reason, he decided he didn't care much anymore. Spending time with him was all that mattered.
