She often sat by her window these days, and had almost forgotten how fresh air could be outside of a locked room. Though she was antisocial, she was never someone who had been very connected to nature, either. It was indoctrinated into her to be unseen, and it worked to her advantage because she was a master at it. It helped with her stealth and in battle, but it worked in her favor the most when she just wanted to avoid people.
As much as the two girls bothered her, she knew they put up with her flaws just as much. With Ty Lee, it was easy to figure out why: The girl was accepting of everyone. Sometimes Mai felt special with Ty Lee because she'd forget that, but those moments never lasted long. With Azula, it had always been obvious that the girl found her useful. Mai also enjoyed what Azula gave her, and that was thrill. Now with Zuko a nonentity in her life, the two girls should have been more than enough to help her ground herself again. Instead, she had tried to avoid them as much as possible, and she knew it was stupid.
She waited for Azula to exit through the Castle doors, watching carefully. She could have her back turned and be aware of the girl's demanding presence, though. The air around Azula always felt so hot and dry.
Her finger traced the edge of her shuriken. Holding it gave her some consolation, she'd recall her childhood and when she'd taught herself how to use the deadly weapons in the privacy of her own room. It seemed this place had taken away too much from her, and what it made her do was realize she did care about a couple of things. Needless to say, Mai didn't feel like Paradisa did her a favor with exposure to such epiphanies.
