How could Azula possibly be disappointed with her choice in company so far? He was taller than her, he certainly looked strong, and if certain people were to be believe, he had the power to crush worlds. All of that, rolled into one handsome package, and apparently with charm too. If this weren’t a week where people were stripped of their powers, and if she didn’t care about company, she might have pushed him around a bit, just to see what he was capable of. Azula liked people with more power than her in a different way than she liked people weaker than her. Azula liked to play with fire, and not just in the literal sense.
Her smile didn’t show teeth. She said, “Why, thank you. You’re quite handsome.”
Azula couldn’t lie, after all.
She stepped out into the hall and pulled the door closed behind her, with one hand. With the other, she took ahold of his arm, going right in close. Azula wasn’t shy about getting personal, now or never.
“So,” she said, “let’s be off. I hope the stairs haven’t changed around too much, or the evening will be over before we even get there.”
It sounded almost humorous, but then again, Azula never was terribly good at jokes.
Superboy-Prime would have no problem displaying his abilities. When he had them back, all she would need to do was ask. He had yet to meet anyone here they could force him to use all of his power. Giving out genuine compliments was rare. The was probably the first time in a long time that he had done so. He hoped that she appreciate it.
“Thanks you.” He said as he allowed for her to take his arm and move in close. He started back in the direction that he came in, back towards the moving stairs. He didn’t see what the benefit was for this castle..or school or whatever it was now to have them. Though, yet again, if he had his abilities back, then it wouldn’t matter to him.
“So. Azula. How have you been enjoying your stay here in Paradisa?” He asked as he glanced over to her. Superboy-Prime himself had almost been here for an entire year. In a few more months, he would have spent an entire year here on this planet. Though, his entire stay here wasn’t completely unpleasant. He did have some fun here every now and then. Which was usually achieved when he made someone else suffer.
Azula was rather used to high-vaulted ceilings, halls wider than streets, and corridors lit with thousands of lamps. These darker, cold-stone walls were confining, far less impressive, and not even dozens of magical staircases could make it seem better. Azula could easily say that, after a mere month in Paradisa, she was finding it hard to be surprised by these sort of strange affairs, especially when she’d never been particularly stunned in the first place.
“It’s been interesting, to say the least,” she replied, lifting her chin to look up at him again. “Some people seem to be determined to cause trouble, and some are easily impressionable and easily allow themselves to be the toys of others. Some seem to understand this place’s need for better management. And despite how dramatic the change has been from a life of commanding armies and crushing resistances... I cannot help but find this place entertaining.”
She paused, and then said, “I hear you’ve been having fun, though. You and I seem to share a thrill.” Her brilliant gold eyes narrowed slightly, as she smiled, and watched his face.
Superboy-Prime could go under the category of people that liked to caused trouble. But he usually only did so when people started constantly messing with him. Anyone that has been on the receiving end of his wrath deserved it.
“Commanding armies and crushing resistances? Your life before here must have really been demanding.” Though, being engaged in those kind of things, she probably never had a dull moment. “And who do you think would be the ideal person to take over management of this place?” If someone did take over this place, he wondered if the random weekly losses would still occur. He would like to never have to worry about the castle changing him into a girl again.
“I assumed that you would hear quite a bit about me when you asked me to be your date.” And he figured it would mostly be negative for the most part. People that were angry at him for hurting them or their friends or because he killed them or their friends. “So we do have something in common.” He said as he grinned.
"When one is going to inherit an entire world, one gets used to the strains of running such a vast empire," she said, simply, "though I do enjoy my own time to hunt. I enjoy hunting, especially when the quarry's up to it."
Manhunting, maybe.
"And as far as the management of Paradisa goes, well, that remains an unanswered question. If I can find myself with many powerful and intelligent allies after barely a month, there's no telling what I can accomplish in two. And, of course, I don't mind sharing, as long as I get what I want. Anyone willing to lend a hand in my empire will reap the rewards they're seeking," she said, diligently. Azula had no qualms with telling him such blunt things, and she would have told the same to anyone else. People with her sort of power didn't need to bother with modesty.
Azula drummed her fingertips against his arm once or twice, idly, vaguely admiring his arms, his strong frame, his big hands. He had a firebender's hands. She could only imagine what they were capable of.
"Oh, there was a bit of a fuss, but who cares what they think? I wouldn't have offered if I had something to doubt. But no one will block our path on the dance floor, that is for sure."
“But when you have the whole world, just how much time will you get to hunt, if any.” Superboy-Prime had never controlled or commanded anything other than his own power. Though, he couldn’t really compare that to the controlling of an army or an entire world. Finding allies would probably be the easiest task for her. Over coming the castle and the obvious changes that it can make would be harder.
“I would like to see just how much better you could make this place.” If It was up to him, he would get rid of a couple of choice people. With his powers, there wasn’t many people there that could actually oppose him. But the fact that he could kill them and they would just come back in three weeks was probably one of the biggest annoyance of this place, next to the random losses.
He felt the drumming of her fingertips on his arms. His body had naturally become this way over time after his powers. The shifting stairs was started to come into view as they continued down the hall. It was good that she seemed happy with her choice so far, but the day was still very young. There was no telling how much would have to happen to sour this night.
“Did you go to these sort of events back in your own world?”
“No one runs a country on their own,” Azula said, diplomatically. “But I understand that is a sacrifice that must be made. I will simply have to find less time-consuming hobbies, or else make sure my advisors are especially well trained to cope without me for at least a few days.”
She trusted that she could make this place a better place to be. After all, what sort of leader would she be if she couldn’t? Azula could imagine it all perfectly: a caste system for people to work their way through, a reorganized castle, set duties for everyone and set positions for everyone.
“In time,” she promised. “Before I make any attempt at truly owning this place, I will observe it for a while -- it would not do to make changes until I have learnt everything I can about its people. There is no rush.”
Azula wasn’t terribly concerned about how the evening would go, on her own part -- she was fairly sure that the evening could go by without messing up even once. It was her pesky housemates, and pesky rival houses, who were likely to spoil her mood.
And balls? She was fairly certain it was her first since she was a very small child.
“There were social events, dinners, parties, but I suspect they were nothing like this one. Royal parties are very calm, sit-down affairs, with extravagant entertainment... no dancing, no choice in dates. Any of differences, we shall have to see,” she said. “Have you ever?”
No one runs a country on their own? It made sense. Counties could be huge. Running one by yourself would probably take a lot. These royalty types must have it really tough. “ You could find a less consuming hobby, but you might not enjoy it just as much.”
Learning about the people would be another difficult task. They came and went so much. In one week, then people could have left and fifteen could have arrived. The place could be really inconsistent.
Superboy-Prime wasn’t swept up in the whole, House Rivalry thing. Probably because he hated a lot of people that were in his house. He didn’t see why the castle saw fit to put him in the same house with most of his hated enemies. He found it pretty amusing when his house lost the Quidditch match. He would probably have been upset if he actually joined the team instead of sitting on the side line and watching.
So the events that Azula had attended were probably more upscale than this one would be. Even if she hadn’t be to a typical ball, she had been to events that were in some way similar to it.
“No. At least none that I can remember. I spent a big portion of my life locked away with three other people in a placed called the Paradise Dimension.” There was that one, and then there was another dimension that he was imprisoned in for four years. His life felt like it was made up of one imprisonment after the next.
"I'm sure I could find something," she said, "there are plenty of things I've never tried." Though, after single-handedly toppling the world's greatest stronghold, crushing thousands of enemies, owning the most luxurious ship in any fleet, capturing titles most people didn't earn until their forties or fifties, and inventing numerous new firebending techniques, it was going to be a feat to top them.
Azula found pride in her house, and while they had upset her dangerously the day before, she still wasn't going to turn tail and call some other house acceptable. Azula was loyal, she would die loyal to her people, no matter what failure they exhibited -- not that she wouldn't punish them for their own disloyalty.
"Paradise Dimension? You certainly do get around," she said, raising an eyebrow. "Normally I would imagine that means an enjoyable time, but seeing as this Paradisa hasn't been remotely close to perfection..."
The stairs rotated and made a path towards the (upper?) floors of the castle. The timing of the rotation was just as the two neared the stairs, it was as if the castle itself was inviting the two of them to the Ball. “What is something that you would like to try?” Though, unless it could accomplished in Paradisa, chances were slim that she would get to do it. People said leaving Paradisa was impossible, but it was obvious that it wasn’t. People left and came frequently. No one really knew why.
“It sounds more pleasant than it is.” In comparison, Paradisa was much better. “ All I could do was watch people as they lived their lives. Finally, I got tired of it and broke out. I tried to help them, but they treated me like a bad guy.” That was some way to show gratitude to someone that was trying to help you.
"Well, for example..." Azula trailed, after a pause for thought. "When I turn sixteen, I'll be engaged to some man, chosen by my father. Therefore, by attending this ball with you, I am doing something I'll never do at home."
She stepped out onto the first step, wary of it deciding to shift again, but it didn't. She placed her free hand on the banister just in case, though she was more than confident about her ability to stay upright. Azula simply did not like things that moved about without her permission.
"Some Paradise, if it isn't perfect," she purred. "But I certainly understand being painted as a bad guy. All my nation wants for the world is for every man, woman and child to be able to take advantage of the Fire nation's prosperity, as a single nation. Yet they complain of being persecuted, complain that we're doing it for entirely selfish purposes. We're just trying to create the perfect world for everyone, and still, they resist. They just don't understand that it's for their own good."
“..When you turn sixteen?” He said as he looked over to her. “You are younger than sixteen?” She had to be kidding. There was noway that she was that young. She looked like she was at least seventeen.
“Your world should appreciate what your people are trying to do.” Being treated like a bad guy when you are doing what was best for the world was extremely unfair. Some worlds just weren’t worth saving. That was what he realized before he came here to this one. “They should just stop resisting and let your country help them. It is hardly selfish if your country is doing it to try to better the world.”
It was at times like that where it seemed like some force was necessary. Such as starting wars. That was something that he had personally done. It was all part of a much larger plan.
She blinked, slowly, and repeated, "Yes, when I turn sixteen. And yes, I am." Her eyes narrowed, very slightly. Was he going to make a big deal about this?
People like the Avatar and his little friends just didn't understand the need for war. They didn't understand how it established right to rule, and skill, and determined how the people were governed. They didn't understand that the benefits of war far out weighed the cost: wars were expensive, but they made money, too. The Fire nation was richer than ever before, with Earth kingdom labour.
"They'll understand sooner or later," she said, pleased. "Everyone wakes up to reality sometime."
“You look older than you are then.” He probably wasn’t the first person to even note how she looked older than she was. But it wasn’t just her looks that made her appear older, it was her personality as well.
“I don’t know how much truth there is to those words. I fought through armies of super beings. They saw me crushing and killing one of their comrades after the other. And they just kept coming at me. It seems like some people are far too stubborn, no matter how powerful and dominating their enemies may be.” Wiping out that whole universe was what he was on his way to do before the caste decided to pull her him. He didn’t even know if he had succeeded or not.
"So I've been told many times," Azula replied, "but there still are those that would speak down to me and call me a child." She glanced at him, taking her eyes off the stairs, and said, "I suppose you understand that, with a name like Superboy."
There would never be an exception to the waking-to-reality, Azula thought. Everyone she knew, everyone she crushed, they had already opened their eyes to it. And some people, like Azula, had been born awake. Reality was her playground, and her duty was to keep people aware of it.
"Some would rather die than submit," Azula said, calmly. "Some people would simply rather experience a crushing death than abandon their cause, and in the light of nationalism, I commend them for that, at least. It's better to die naive but dedicated than it is to die casually, without real reason."
Her smile didn’t show teeth. She said, “Why, thank you. You’re quite handsome.”
Azula couldn’t lie, after all.
