“Oh no,” Helena interrupted, guessing where that statement was going and deciding to put an end to it before it got there. “You’re not weaseling out that easy.”
Kaylee and Drizzt had helped Helena more than she could ever express during that awful time when she had first learned she was blind. They had been the solid ground she had clung to when she had been drowning in the darkness. She wanted to do something more than just paint them a picture and judging from the way they had acted toward each other that night and then in the book, she thought she knew the way. All the rumors flying around weren’t helping to dispel the notion that there was something a bit more than friendly going on between them, either.
“Look, Drizzt, I’m going to tell you a little story, okay?” Helena said seriously, continuing on without giving him a chance to reply. “Give you some insight into how girls think.” Storytelling for her own enjoyment was a little different than doing it for an audience, so instead of wondering about how to best begin, Helena jumped right in.
“In my world, Earth, there’s this guy named Val. He’s funny and smart and we’ve got a lot in common. He cares about me a lot, too. I know he does, because of the things he says, the things he does, and the way he kisses me. Because he does, kiss me. Not like a friend or my father, but like a boyfriend,” Helena paused, waiting to see if he was following so far. When he nodded, she continued.
“The thing is, as much as Val loves me, I don’t love him. I could, after enough years have passed. But I don’t now, because I’m in love with someone else. I have been for a few years now. There’s this other guy. His name’s Valentine, and, well, this is where it gets complicated. See, Valentine and Val are the same person. Or would be the same person, if they didn’t come from two different worlds. Val is the person from Earth. And Valentine’s the person from the world I created. I didn’t know he...” Helena trailed off, realizing Drizzt had stopped listening. “Where’d I lose you?”
