Haishi opened the door quickly at the knock. His facial expression indicated a cold indifference--maybe a slight annoyance. The truth was, he was slightly shaken by the conversation he had in his journal earlier--it seemed like some imposter was claiming to be his daughter "Hanabi". It irked him. Mostly because he was convinced this was some enemy ninja's attempt to assasinate him--but partially because...well...he had always thought that if he had a second daughter, he would name her Hanabi. It bothered him, that some upstart could hit upon something like that.

He survey the child before him impassively--only a small muscle in his jaw twitching as he looked her over. She had his hair, his eyes. It was certainly uncanny. He shook his head slightly--this was probably some ninjutsu meant to trick him. He wouldn't let that happen. Instead he spoke in his most icy tone.

"Ah, so we meet imposter."

Hanabi took a deep breath as she steeled her resolve, refusing to allow his words to get to her.

"Hello, Father," she greeted him, bowing. She tried to act as though she hadn't heard what he'd called her. "You are doing well here, I hope?"

His eyes narrowed. And he wrinkled his nose, giving his face the appearance of sniffing something highly unpleasant.

"I'm not your father, you impudent ninja. What are you--some low class chuunin trying to earn a name for yourself by taking out Hiashi Hyuuga? As if your trashy jutsu could fool me. Byakugan!" He formed the seals instantly, his eyes bulging slightly as he stepped into his gentle fist stance...

and then out of it again. What? He could see this child was in fact, a child--and not merely a clone or illusion. He frowned, almost at a loss for words...

"W-what is the meaning of this?"

Her breath hitched in her throat when he activated the Byakugan, and it felt like someone had taken her fear, formed it into a cold rock and dropped it in the pit of her stomach. If he decided to attack, there was no way she'd be able to dodge in time, especially with her own kekkei genkai lost to her...

When he stepped out of his stance, she sighed quietly in relief.

"Exactly what I said, Father," Hanabi replied calmly. "I am Hanabi Hyuuga, your youngest daughter. I don't know why you can't remember me, but it's the truth. I have never lied to you."

He studied her with a measured glance, and then responded in a severe and clipped tone.

"My youngest daughter? Then why can't I remember you?" He narrowed his eyes. "Unless you're a failure like my other daughter--perhaps I've chosen to forget you and the embarassment you've caused me. I wish I could forget Hinata." He snorted.

"So then, is that the case? Are you also a miserable failure?"

"No!"

Hanabi closed her eyes, attempting to get a grip on her temper.

"I told you before in the journal - you favored me over Hinata. I'm a better ninja even though she's five years older than me. It's what you told Kurenai before you practically handed Hinata over to her."

She doubts that she's going to be the favored child for much longer, however, when he finds out what this place stole from her...

This was interesting. With the tinest smirk of approval, he noted this girl's fervernt response. It seemed she was no push over like her sister...if she was indeed, Hinata's sister.

"A better ninja than Hinata? Well that wouldn't be hard." On sudden impulse he lunged towards her--curious to see if she was indeed a 'better ninja.' Nothing like a little hands-on test to find out the truth.

It took Hanabi a split-second longer to react than it normally would have taken her, but she dodged his lunge all the same, quickly stepping back and to the right. Quickly she shifted her stance and lunged forward with an attempted blow of her own.

He noted her reaction with approval--she was certianly no Hinata. Intimidation tactics weren't working, at least. He stepped out of her lunge, and watched as she recovered herself gracefully, and stood in perfect fighting stance.

He, however, relaxed, and even offered her a small smile. Talent was something he could appreciate.

"Perhaps you are a Hyuuga after all. And from the looks of it, a main branch Hyuuga no less." his gaze lingered on her forehead.

"It could be possible that I am suffering from some sort of jutsu designed to provoke memory loss. Hanabi does sound like a Hyuuga name."

Truth be told, this was excellent news. He had a daughter who wasn't a totally failure? Someone who could one day, perhaps, surpass Neji?

"Now, show me your byakugan."

...and Hanabi cringed. She'd been hoping it wouldn't come to this.

"I'm sorry, Father," she replied. She had slid out from her fighting stance, but was still standing at attention. "I can't. Whatever it is about this place that is affecting your memory...has taken my byakugan from me."

Hanabi closed her eyes and waited for the hammer to fall.

The semi-pleased expression he had been wearing earlier fell away immediately, to be replaced by an even icier expression than before.

"Wonderful. Two failure daughters." He turned, and made to stalk back into his room. Before slamming the door, he called out coldly.

"I'll arrange for Neji to confirm your identity. Until then, I don't expect to see you. Stay out of my way."

He slammed the door.

She could feel the tears collecting in her eyes, feel her chest tightening, but refused to give into the urge to cry. That didn't keep a few tears from slipping out, though.

"Yes, Father," she said quietly after his door had slammed shut. Then she turned and walked away.

She didn't start running back to her room until she'd reached the end of the hallway.
