She tried to convince herself that she wasn't afraid. )
He survey the child before him impassively--only a small muscle in his jaw twitching as he looked her over. She had his hair, his eyes. It was certainly uncanny. He shook his head slightly--this was probably some ninjutsu meant to trick him. He wouldn't let that happen. Instead he spoke in his most icy tone.
"Ah, so we meet imposter."

"Hello, Father," she greeted him, bowing. She tried to act as though she hadn't heard what he'd called her. "You are doing well here, I hope?"
Reply
"I'm not your father, you impudent ninja. What are you--some low class chuunin trying to earn a name for yourself by taking out Hiashi Hyuuga? As if your trashy jutsu could fool me. Byakugan!" He formed the seals instantly, his eyes bulging slightly as he stepped into his gentle fist stance...
and then out of it again. What? He could see this child was in fact, a child--and not merely a clone or illusion. He frowned, almost at a loss for words...
"W-what is the meaning of this?"

When he stepped out of his stance, she sighed quietly in relief.
"Exactly what I said, Father," Hanabi replied calmly. "I am Hanabi Hyuuga, your youngest daughter. I don't know why you can't remember me, but it's the truth. I have never lied to you."
Reply
"My youngest daughter? Then why can't I remember you?" He narrowed his eyes. "Unless you're a failure like my other daughter--perhaps I've chosen to forget you and the embarassment you've caused me. I wish I could forget Hinata." He snorted.
"So then, is that the case? Are you also a miserable failure?"

Hanabi closed her eyes, attempting to get a grip on her temper.
"I told you before in the journal - you favored me over Hinata. I'm a better ninja even though she's five years older than me. It's what you told Kurenai before you practically handed Hinata over to her."
She doubts that she's going to be the favored child for much longer, however, when he finds out what this place stole from her...

"A better ninja than Hinata? Well that wouldn't be hard." On sudden impulse he lunged towards her--curious to see if she was indeed a 'better ninja.' Nothing like a little hands-on test to find out the truth.

He, however, relaxed, and even offered her a small smile. Talent was something he could appreciate.
"Perhaps you are a Hyuuga after all. And from the looks of it, a main branch Hyuuga no less." his gaze lingered on her forehead.
"It could be possible that I am suffering from some sort of jutsu designed to provoke memory loss. Hanabi does sound like a Hyuuga name."
Truth be told, this was excellent news. He had a daughter who wasn't a totally failure? Someone who could one day, perhaps, surpass Neji?
"Now, show me your byakugan."
Reply
"I'm sorry, Father," she replied. She had slid out from her fighting stance, but was still standing at attention. "I can't. Whatever it is about this place that is affecting your memory...has taken my byakugan from me."
Hanabi closed her eyes and waited for the hammer to fall.
Reply
"Wonderful. Two failure daughters." He turned, and made to stalk back into his room. Before slamming the door, he called out coldly.
"I'll arrange for Neji to confirm your identity. Until then, I don't expect to see you. Stay out of my way."
He slammed the door.

"Yes, Father," she said quietly after his door had slammed shut. Then she turned and walked away.
She didn't start running back to her room until she'd reached the end of the hallway.
