[how odd is it that Mary who just turned twenty herself is throwing a impromptu/planned thirtieth birthday party for her son? Kinda odd. However it's not quite as odd as it could be considering everything that had been going on around the castle. Dean could've woken up thirty years old and a female, or in Sam's body... or in John's and really

That, and he didn't want to start fighting about it. Or anything. Sam needed his life to be a fight-free zone for a while. There was also probably some guilt in there too, considering that some of the last words to his father weren't exactly the greatest.
However, he should have figured that at Dean's birthday party he wouldn't really be able to avoid him. Actually *seeing* him is another thing entirely and it rehashes a bunch of old memories he'd rather not be reliving -- like nearly losing Dean the first time, and actually losing his father in the process -- and he feels himself start to chicken out a bit. Because if this isn't real, he doesn't want to trust it, but sooner or later he knows he's going to have to bite the bullet and do this.]
....Dad?
[Aaaaand Sam decides to write a novel. Sorry.]

But now it's different, he guesses. Dad's here, Mom's here, Sam, Claire - even Ruby and Bela, apparently - and that, there, grants him the one thing he really only wanted: a family.
Dean sidles up quietly from his father's other side, looking at Sam and raising an eyebrow. Somehow he knows that his brother's been putting off talking to him since he got here. He'll leave the two of them be for now, suddenly remembering the last time Sam spoke to him back in the real world - an argument, an apology, a cup of coffee and no goodbye.
Dean sets his sights on Claire and Mom and heads for them, for now.]

Walking towards him, his smile grows as he resolves to make this party something good...not a chance to argue or fight. There's plenty of time for conflict (a thing he hates to admit he misses some...there's a secret sort of pride in how stubborn Sam can be, hard-headed as his mother), but not on Dean's birthday.]
Sammy...how you doin', Son?
[hey, novels are fun to read! :p]

I'm -- okay.
[is kind of at a loss for what to say now. He hadn't really thought past getting his father's attention, but aside from the fact that it's really, really good to see the man actually alive and breathing as oppose to, you know, a dead body and/or a disembodied soul type thing, he doesn't really have all that much to say.]
....How long have you been here? [because that's the next best question?]

[About as lost himself here, John is, mainly because he's so happy to see Sam alive, well, and less than demon-y. It feels really good, actually, having the whole family here for Dean's birthday party...
Reaching out, he lays a hand on Sam's shoulder with quiet affection and smiles softly.]
Sammy...it's good to see you...really good. It's great, that we can all be here for this, y'know?

Nonetheless, leans into his father's touch with a small smile. God, he'd missed this on so many levels.]
Yeah, yeah it is. Only thing Dean ever wanted -- just everybody in one place.

Ain't that the truth.
[catches sight of Mary across the room and grins, pointing her out]
I kinda like the fact that you boys can see what a beaut your mom was when she was younger. Shows more now, but she was a lot like you when we were kids.

[follows his dad's eyes and frowns slightly -- that *wasn't* how he met his mom when he first got here. But then again, apparently the castle screwed with people sometimes. And it was still his mom. Surprised when John says he was a lot like his mom -- everyone always said he was like his dad.]
Yeah?
