Cair Paradisa is a magical castle that kidnaps people from different worlds and different times within the same world. I'm from Aselia before the Tree was revived, for example. The castle grants small material wishes: anything you ask for within reasonable limits will appear or be brought by the ghost servants. The castle exacts a price of some sort, a permanent loss, from every resident. It could be an item, sense, memory, ability, anything. We also experience occasional temporary losses, ranging anywhere from days to weeks, and these can be almost literally anything.

The journals are used for communication, there's no way to leave, death isn't permanent, and the kitchen is on the first floor.
