No, this isn't the afterlife, although many of the people here arrive shortly after their deaths. It's a castle called Paradisa, that takes people out of their own worlds and keeps us here until it decides to send us back. It also takes something from us when we come here - usually an ability, item, or memory. The journals are how people communicate, and the ghosts are servants that bring things. Any physical comfort you want, you need only ask for, and the castle will provide it.
