Do you mind if I ask how long it's been?

I arrived here on January 2, 2009, so as of today it's three years.

Wow. Has it gotten any easier?

[a bit of a laugh]

Some things, yes. It's nice to be in one place and develop a routine, but in other ways?

No. Not so much.

I didn't expect as much. Just one of those things they tell you. I've only been here about seven months so there's still a lot to learn. It's still hard. Especially without my younger siblings.

[nods]

I've been there. My older brother has been in and out of here a few times. Being alone ... sucks. Especially when you're used to having that person around all the time.

Then you understand. My parents were murdered when I was fourteen. It's been my responsibility to watch over them. I suppose there is comfort in knowing that time stops.

My mom was killed when I was a baby too. Not the same thing, really, but Dean pretty much raised me.

So yeah, I get it.

Sunny was only a few months old when our house burned down.

Is your brother here now?

... Same here.

[a beat]

Do you know what caused the fire?

[another pause, before shaking his head]

Never mind, I'm sorry. That might be a little too personal.

[and then another pause]

Yeah, he's here. Last I checked he was on a loss, though.

It's fine. [She's really used to it. She's far more logical than she is emotional.] It was a secret organization. Well it wasn't really the organization. There was a schism, and now they're killing each other off.

[A hum.] That's good -- not the loss. That he's here.

Oh.

[his was a demon. he thought for a second they might be from the same world, but apparently not]

Mine was ... different circumstances, obviously.

[a breath]

Yeah, it is. It's better to have him around than not.

Doesn't make the circumstances any easier. Losing family is still losing family. And when it's all you really have, it's even worse.

[Her voice is softer.] You're lucky then.

It is. I don't remember much of my mom, but I wish I did.

[there's a small smile in his voice]

They might show up some day. I've seen crazier things happen.

That's what I worry for Sunny. We have one thing of our parents, and that's hardly adequate. She reminds me much of my father though. Jovial and very clever.

Oh, I haven't given up hope. I just miss them.

She sounds like she keeps you on your toes.
