It's mostly a matter of following the directions step by step.

[Felix leans over the counter to peer at the cook book he'd borrowed from the library, scanning the page with the finger of his left hand. His right arm is still in a sling thanks to the expedition, which meant most of the actual work was up to Dexera.]

You have to measure out and mix all these powders. Here. [He hands Dextera a measuring cup]

[he takes the cup and reads the measurements on the side. okay, they match up with what the book says so whatever is listed here goes in the cup. ...one at a time, probably.

so he'll start measuring them out first, slowly. Dextera learned the hard way not to rush things but that doesn't mean he won't put too much in at some point.]

[He watches Dextera carefully at first, just to be sure the kid doesn't empty the whole bag of flour. Sometimes he wonders...seriously...]

Whoa whoa whoa...that's fine. [He stills Dextera's hand with his own]

Here...add these now. [He pushes the baking powder and baking soda closer, then hands Dexera a teaspoon instead] This is the easy part.

[he takes the teaspoon and starts putting in both the baking powder and baking soda, but after a minute he has to ask.]

Why is it called 'baking soda'? [isn't that something you drink?]

[Felix frowns] I'm not sure. Perhaps it's short for something.

[humm...well it doesn't look like something to drink so he won't ask if it can be.

instead he'll finish up with the two and hope that's enough.]

[Not that he'd...know.

He'll pause to scan the recipe again. Eggs? Ok. Butter? Got it.

Frown.]

What in the name of all the saints does cream mean?

[Dextera looks just as confused.]

I don't know. It doesn't say in the book?

No. At least not here. As if it expects me to know...

[Getting angry at the book won't help, Felix.

He starts flipping through to see if he can find out...]

What do you think it means? Maybe we can figure it through context...

[he taps his pencil against the journal.]

It sounds like something wet. Water, milk, blood...[yes he did write that.] Maybe something like that?

[He does spare Dextera a curious look, but he's more concerned with this at the moment] Well, yes, but cream is being used here as an adjective, not as a thing. Still...it would describe the texture, I suppose...[Thinking. Augh...cooking is hard]

[not as a thing? but when were things not used as things? hummm...maybe the Cursebring Angel could have helped here. it was good at mixing things.

wait.]

Mixing things together?

[He nods] It would appear so, though a little more specific about how. That's good enough to go on, I think.

[Grabs and egg and holds it out to Dextera] Here. Crack this open into this other bowl.

[he does so but stops when the egg yolk starts to come out. that's...supposed to happen, right?]

[Bemused expression] What's the matter? It's not off, is it?

[Dextera shakes his head and pulls the journal closer.]

Is this supposed to happen? When it opens.
