[it's been a little while, but yet again, at ten, "Everybody Knows" comes wafting over the journals. Harry's kind to his record this week and doesn't scratch the needle over the vinyl - he just lifts it off, and lets silence reign over the journal for a good twenty seconds or so. long enough to make people wonder if he's actually going to open

I've never heard anyone broadcast anything like that. We don't have anything like the journals on my world, so music is usually kept to concerts and private gatherings.

So you don't have recorded music where you're from? Must get so quiet you can't hear yourself think!

Recordings are rare except among nobility. It was probably more common in the Dawn Age, but we've lost a substantial amount of technology since then. There's music in everything if you look for it. We have hymns and songs, and people still play instruments.

So ... you had technology, but you lost it? [now that's a new one. color him intrigued] What happened?

There was a war. It was so terrible that the world itself began to die... It was necessary for people to change their way of life in order to survive.

... Jesus. I'm beginning to wonder if I'm the only guy who came from a world where there wasn't a huge, awful war going on ...

That war was over two thousand years ago. There have been wars since, but there is finally peace on my world.

Glad t' hear it ... So ... you guys are just getting technology and stuff back, now? Is that it?

The same technology that was used to save my planet doomed it in the first place. We still have a few years before the energy crisis becomes readily apparent, but we need to learn how to be independent of it.
