[it's been a little while, but yet again, at ten, "Everybody Knows" comes wafting over the journals. Harry's kind to his record this week and doesn't scratch the needle over the vinyl - he just lifts it off, and lets silence reign over the journal for a good twenty seconds or so. long enough to make people wonder if he's actually going to open ( Read more... )

[That was... some language.]

... Thank you for the welcome, I suppose. [Composed as usual.] Do things like the room changes happen frequently?

[are you kidding? this broadcast was TAME compared to some of his others]

Unless you look manlier than you sound, I'm gonna go ahead and guess you're Tear. [he chuckles] ... I'd say the fit hits the shan at least once a month for everyone, more often individually for some people. Your mileage may vary.

[NO ONE IN AULDRANT TALKS LIKE THAT OKAY.]

Yes, I'm Tear. And you are?

[Ugh. With the faintest irritation:] I'll keep that in mind.

It's nice to meet you.

I've never heard anyone broadcast anything like that. We don't have anything like the journals on my world, so music is usually kept to concerts and private gatherings.

So you don't have recorded music where you're from? Must get so quiet you can't hear yourself think!

Recordings are rare except among nobility. It was probably more common in the Dawn Age, but we've lost a substantial amount of technology since then. There's music in everything if you look for it. We have hymns and songs, and people still play instruments.

So ... you had technology, but you lost it? [now that's a new one. color him intrigued] What happened?

There was a war. It was so terrible that the world itself began to die... It was necessary for people to change their way of life in order to survive.

... Jesus. I'm beginning to wonder if I'm the only guy who came from a world where there wasn't a huge, awful war going on ...

That war was over two thousand years ago. There have been wars since, but there is finally peace on my world.

[She hopes it lasts.]

Glad t' hear it ... So ... you guys are just getting technology and stuff back, now? Is that it?

The same technology that was used to save my planet doomed it in the first place. We still have a few years before the energy crisis becomes readily apparent, but we need to learn how to be independent of it.

Well, damn. ... I'd say maybe while you're here you could see if anyone else could help you figure it out, but ... you forget, when you go home. Stupid place.

I don't claim to be a scientist, but any information along those lines would be beneficial...

[A sigh.]

We'll solve this on our own.
