[The sound of a breeze and faint voices in the background suggest that Jack's outside as he dictates his entry, the flap of his coat adding to the other soft noises.]

Sorry I've been absent lately. I was... well, laying low, if I'm honest.

Not sure if there's anyone that's been missing me, but here I am if you were.

We've never met, but I hope things are well now. Do take care of yourself.

[A soft chuckle] That's mighty kind of you, especially since we don't know each other.

Doesn't mean I haven't been in the same place.

True enough!

I'm Jack Harkness, by the way.

Violet Baudelaire. It's a pleasure to make your acquaintance, sir.

Nice to meet you, Violet. Call me Jack, though. Sir makes me sound so old.

Sorry. I didn't mean to offend. It's... the polite thing to do in my time.

Oh, no, I'm far from offended. Don't worry, I remember back when it was the polite thing to do, too.

When are you from?

1932. And for you?

1932 was a good year! I'm from all over, but most recently the twenty-first century.

How are you from all over? And '32 hasn't been a good year for me. Neither was '31 or '30.

[A chuckle] I dabble in time travel.

[His tone sobers at her next words, though] Well, I hope '33 is better when you get back home.

Time travel? Like the TARDIS?

Exactly like the TARDIS! In the TARDIS, actually, though I've done some on my own of course.

You're friends with the Doctors, then?

I am! I'm trying to learn the technology behind it. It's terribly advanced.

Oh, what was it like? Travelling in it? I'm honestly very jealous of you.

Yeah, pretty advanced stuff. I can figure out the logic to a point, but even coming from a more advanced future, most of the actual technology escapes me.

It doesn't seem like much when you're actually inside, but I may be a little jaded. I've been jumping through time and space for quite a while.
