[The sound of a breeze and faint voices in the background suggest that Jack's outside as he dictates his entry, the flap of his coat adding to the other soft noises.]

Sorry I've been absent lately. I was... well, laying low, if I'm honest.

Not sure if there's anyone that's been missing me, but here I am if you were.

Glad to hear you're well, Jack.

[Jack Harkness]

Anything in particular you were laying low from that I could assist with?

Thanks, Doc. Who've things been going with you?

Nothing dangerous or anything like that. Just got caught in a tricky situation with a friend and thought I'd stay outta everyone's hair.

Oh, all things considered, just fine. Got myself shot in the shoulder, but that's been patched up nicely, courtesy of a few kind souls in the Clinic, and I hardly notice it, now. It's certainly a far cry from regeneration.

With a friend? Oh, dear. That's the worst sort of stickiness, isn't it... I do hope you've got it all sorted, now...?

[Snorts softly] You're just a magnet for trouble, no matter which regeneration you're in.

It's taken care of, don't worry. Got mixed up helping out a vampire and the whole thing kinda backfired. Not everyone shares the same definition of "helping".

yay! cricketycricket September 12 2011, 23:25:06 UTC
Takes one to know one, Captain. .... and much in the same vein, I'm afraid I know exactly what you mean. I'm glad to near it's working itself out, though. Especially with vampires involved. They've become a bit of a touchy subject with some lately, from what I've heard.

Hey, not saying it's a bad trait. Keeps things interesting at least.

Seems like there's quite a bit of drama to be found around them. Can't say I'm surprised, since the whole blood sucking thing is usually misunderstood.

Mm. .... Hold on a moment, Jack. [his voice is still light, but there's a hint of an undertone growing] How did you say you were helping this friend of yours, again?

[Ah, he was worried you might as that question. He shrugs casually, though.]

I was letting him feed from me.

You were ---- [that hint of a tone is in full force, now.] Jack.

[he pauses for a moment] They can get their sustenance from the clinic, you know. There's no reason you should have to put yourself at risk like that.

[And, even in an earlier reincarnation, the Doctor is still the only person that can make Jack feel like a scolded child. He knows now that it was stupid, but at the time it was... nice to be needed, and to be doing something useful for the greater good.]

His loss basically made it so that he had to feed from people, otherwise it was something like poison for him.

[he scowls a bit - it'll show through in his tone] While I can understand your reasoning, and why you'd want to help - especially since you consider him a friend ...

This place is immensely varied, yes, but ... not everyone here is as enlightened as they are in your time. Not everyone will see someone helping a friend - they'll just see another victim, willing or not - and someone preying on them.

I do hope neither of you were terribly hurt?

Yeah, I kinda figured that out after the fact. But I'm also used to people not being as open-minded about certain arrangements as I am.

Nobody was hurt at all, that's kinda the stupid part. People were just upset by the principle of it.

So ... [his anger slowly melts, until there's the tiniest hint of amusement] ... you were lying low from ... an argument, essentially?

[Jack pouts a bit at the Doctor's tone, thankful the man couldn't see the expression.] Multiple arguments, actually, most of them with people I don't even know.

Afraid of sounding a bit like a parrot, then, I'd wager. [well, at least that much, he can understand]

Geronimooooo.

... No one asked the peanut gallery, Tardy. Shush.
