If anyone needs me, I'll be in the library for a while today, then out and around the castle grounds. I won't have my journal open while I'm going over maps, if I guess that's also an invitation.
Or is all the grumbling and nonsense the castle playing tricks on me? At least Scooter still seems to know what I'm gesturing about.

[Normally, he just gets the journal to dictated what Sakura says to him and everything is good. They can have their strange half-written-half-spoken conversation and most enjoyable it is too.

But now the journal is spouting words he doesn't recognise]

[Hrmmm he switches to Thedas common tongue, because EVERYONE speaks Thedas common tongue, right? RIGHT?!!]

...No. It still is not working. I should have known this magic would backfire some day. It always does. Perhaps it is just the book?

[ She's hearing multiple languages now, and that was another shift she recognized as one in language, if she has no damn clue what he's saying. And her writing->dictation apparently isn't making sense to him, or maybe it is! It doesn't help her either way, since she still can't understand what he's saying.

Frustrated, she pauses to sketch out a very rough estimate of where she is, and a GIANT QUESTION MARK. It kind of looks like the kitchen, and those stick figures are probably her and scooter, and then that other stick figure might be Fenris -- she's. She's no artist. For some reason the microwave is drawn almost as big as the fridge. (Who knows.) ]

[He stares at that for a long, long time. After a while, there is the subtle sound of paper moving as he turns the journal upside down to see if that helps any]

...Is that the magic box? [Oh wait, she clearly isn't understanding him. He takes a moment, before drawing a smiley face in an attempt to show he understood.

...Maker it feels wrong drawing a smiley face. That done, he heads towards the kitchen]

[ She figures the smiley face means something made sense, so she figures she'll stick around here, listening to the journal off and on with a frown, and reflexively petting Scooter's head (not hard, it's always right about that level of easy reach. ]

[Eventually, Fenris shows up and gives her an awkward wave of greeting]

I think something is wrong with the journals.

[Yup. Still Thedas common]

[ Slightly hopeful, she ends up sighing when she hears him talking. It's funny, because it's so clearly his voice -- it's weird having the equivalent of gibberish being spoken for all she understands. On the upside, she's getting a crash course in what so many people sound like speaking the various languages native to them.

Just sucks she has no idea what he's saying in this one, but there's one upside: ASL.

She signs hello, and an apology, that she does not understand what she hears. ]

[Look how useful this ended up being for them. He sighs, nodding in understanding, singing his own apology, before adding, as best he can that magic is doing something. Again]

[ When she gets what he's saying, she smiles, correcting that she thinks it is a lack of magic, actually. So is he happy? Not knowing what is said is hard, something magic made easier. What if the not knowing stays for a long time?

She quirks up an eyebrow, thankful to find someone she can speak with across language barriers, if this is a somewhat amusing use of ASL above and beyond her own lacks. ]

[His face says it ALL on his feelings towards magic doing something helpful in this stupid place. Why'd you have to go there, Sakura?

After a moment's consideration, he signs back that people will just have to create a language everyone can understand. That seems to have been what happened in Thedas, after all.

The eyebrow quirk gets the smallest of smiles. He's glad he has more than just Isabela to talk to]

[ She's perverse (not in a sexual way) enough to play devil's advocate. If she does like his solution, and in a way, she'd almost prefer it. Building something together creates more unity while it also creates misunderstandings, but people (not strictly humans, they don't have a strictly human population here, hell, look at present company) had misunderstandings no matter how much common ground they might otherwise share

[That much was so true. The smallest thing taken out of context could spark an all out war. He considers this point for a few moments, clearly unhappy with admitting magic can do some good.

Eventually, though, he signs back that she has a point. It does make life easier, and there have been no ill effects from it until it was taken away.

Hee signed back that don't these things usually last a week? A whole week of miscommunication. Joy]

[ She nods, reaffirming that it's usually about seven days. There's a pause as she's still, thinking, keeping her hands from moving because that kind of movement can be misleading. Actually, now that she thinks about it, what was one of the things she'd brought up before?

She asks if he has time free this afternoon. ]

[He shrugs, signing back that considering she is one of only two people in the whole castle he can currently communicate with, his day is completely free]

[ She asks if he wants to go to the hot waters in the afternoon. She has maps to show someone soon, but later, why not? It was about relaxation anyway, might as well use now as an excuse. ]
