Why does that word sound familiar? I don't know what it means.

Ninja means something across different cultures. Where I'm from, it means a well trained warrior who usually lives and works for a village of ninja. Ninja can be hired through their village to act as escort workers or body guards, or to fight on behalf of someone else. Other worlds call them assassins or mythical beings that never really existed. It all depends.
